Welcome
The award-winning faculty and students in the Department of Religious Studies undertake academic research into the religions and cultures of the world. Unique at Queen's, the department houses experts on China, India and the Middle East, and has research links to universities across the world. In addition to this strength in the world's major religions and cultures, faculty and and students also focus on the contemporary Canadian religious landscape. With substantial government funding they are investigating the ways religions influence Canadian public policy and how Canada's religious landscape is changing as a result of immigration and globalization. Our faculty and students also investigate challenging theoretical questions with practical consequences: Do religions promote violence? What is the place of religion in democratic states? Do religions have a role to play in the transition to an ecologically sustainable economy? We offer minor, medial and major concentrations

About Religious Studies Religion is central to all aspects of human life. The Department of Religious Studies offers a wide range of courses to help students explore religion in its many aspects in societies around the world; become familiar with the diversity of religious expressions; and develop the conceptual tools necessary for understanding how religion shapes the thoughts, lives, and values of its practitioners. The Department encourages students to draw upon a variety of fields and disciplines for their study of religion, including African-American studies, anthropology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, literary criticism, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. This interdisciplinary and multicultural character makes religious studies at Vanderbilt an excellent field for a general liberal arts education.
Students are given considerable freedom to shape their 30- hour major or 18-hour minor in religious studies around their own interests. Students are simply required to select courses that: (I) introduce them to the range of ways in which religions are studied and understood; and (II) familiarize them with at least two major world religious traditions. In the process, students learn to understand and appreciate more deeply the role religion plays in contemporary society. A major in religious studies, besides the personal growth it affords, lays a solid foundation on which to build a career in professions that demand critical thinking and conceptual flexibility in interacting with diverse populations. The minor in religious studies and the minor in Jewish studies, though narrower in scope, have the same goals.

Three major disciplines in one Department The Department of Religious Studies, Classics and Philosophy represents the union in 1983 of two original departments of the old University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, namely Divinity and Classics. Three major disciplines, each with its own identity and content, complement one another and provide unique opportunities for inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural studies. The Department is the largest in the faculty of Arts. It provides a full range of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes as well as a Diploma in Religious Studies through its Associate and Affiliate Colleges. Religious Studies is concerned with religion as a phenomenon, the sociology, psychology and philosophy of religion. Although it looks at all the major religions of the world, it concentrates on the three main religions in Zimbabwe, i.e. African Traditional Religion, Christianity and Islam. Within the compass of Christianity come Biblical Studies (both Old and New Testament), Christian History and Thought, Christian Theology and African Theology. Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Greek form part of the Religious Studies programme.

Dempsy Hall
UW Oshkosh Religious Studies explores the crucial role that religion plays in the lives of individuals and communities. A central objective of Religious Studies courses at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is to help students examine human meaning systems in all their complexity and better understand how different religions influence human behavior and shape culture. A second objective of Religious Studies is to help students think critically about ultimate questions such as, What is real and true? and, How ought we to live? Such questioning naturally follows as students explore the diverse ways that people conceive of reality and of human moral obligations. In addition to helping students intelligently explore questions of meaning and understand the role of religion in the world, Religious Studies has a third objective, promoting a democratic respect for religious difference. Religious Studies
The religious studies major allows students to engage religious issues with other disciplines (art, classics, English, history, pastoral studies, philosophy, sociology, and women's studies). The shape of the major offers critical understandings of religion as community and individual enterprise, especially as religion relates to other human endeavors in the allied fields. Its focus is in the world's major religions, their rituals, beliefs, texts, and ethical systems, as well as the various cultural contexts that shape, and are in turn shaped by, religious communities and beliefs. The major's capstone involves an interdisciplinary seminar with other majors, applying religious studies methodologies to our most basic understanding of cultures, commitments, and behaviors.
The religious studies major, with concentration in either art, classics, English, history, pastoral studies, philosophy, sociology, or women's studies provides excellent training in cultural literacy. It offers broad background for graduate school in religious studies, ministerial studies, international studies, or programs in the allied fields. Its broadest appeal will be to those who wish to engage and integrate several different fields of study, and to understand religious community and spirituality in their incarnations across many disciplines and cultures.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Students often spend the January Short Term in internships that expand on what they learn in the classroom. Religion major Ane Johnson '98 credits Chaplain Jan Fuller Carruthers with setting up her junior year internship with Amnesty International in Washington, D.C. "I learned about teamwork and working in an office while working closely with people who suffered abuses administered by their own countries," Ane says. "The internship not only helped me make some great contacts, it also gave me a sociological, personal, and historical perspective on which I could base my studies of religion."

Religious Studies Religious Studies examines the way a person or community makes sense out of life (world views) and the way a person or community acts out and lives in a world view (life styles). The study of religion includes (1) exploration of the nature and meaning of the religious dimensions of human experience; (2) study of the major traditions which remember and transmit religious experience and expressions; (3) encouragement of an inquisitive, analytical and open approach to multiple religious perspectives; and (4) exploration of the value frameworks in various religious perspectives to help clarify student values. Many graduates of Alma's Religious Studies program have continued their studies in graduate schools or seminaries. Others have entered church work, chaplaincies, teaching, social work agencies, personnel offices, communications, journalism and business or have volunteered for service in VISTA and the Peace Corps.
