THE RELIGIOUS STUDIES DEPARTMENT'S GOAL is to help students understand the nature of religion. Religious traditions cannot be studied in isolation merely as a set of beliefs. They interact with all other dimensions of culture: politics, art, philosophy, economics, science. All of our courses, therefore, present religion as a multidimensional phenomenon that expresses in many forms what a given people holds to be the most powerful and important realities. We implement our goal both through the study of specific religious traditions and through the study of topics ranging across several traditions at once. The strength of our current faculty lies in American Religions (including Native American traditions), Buddhism, Christianity, South Asian traditions, Judaism, and the religious philosophies of Greco-Roman antiquity. We emphasize the historical development of these traditions, making our students aware that this involves not just a development of beliefs and practices, but also of political, social, scientific, and artistic influences. It is our hope that our students, after being exposed to many religious documents from many traditions, will become more articulate about religious issues and more reflective about the diverse ways in which human beings make meaning in their lives.

The study of philosophy promotes rational and critical thinking and provides a sense of the intellectual traditions of the ancient, medieval, and modern periods. Students of philosophy develop an awareness of the role of reason in creating personal worldviews and become engaged with the broad array of issues central to human existence. The study of theology introduces students to the complex concept of the divine and promotes critical examination of reality and humanity in light of faith and belief in the nature of God. The study of religion introduces the student to the variety of religious experiences in the human condition, the major tenets of world religions, and the role that religion plays in the development of a culture.

Research in RELS Conference

Saturday, April 29 - Sunday, April 30, 2006 Religious Studies is the study of religion, as understood in its broadest sense. Religious Studies is grounded in an examination of the human response to our biggest questions, such as: why are we here? what is our quest? and what is the meaning of life? Each religious tradition has its own answers to such questions, along with its own set of moral values and ethical guidelines for its followers.
Careers: Graduates from this discipline have gone on to work in such positions as: publications director, professor, curator, genealogist, artist, demographer, clergy, and archivist.

The Program in Religious Studies explores religious practices as important aspects of social life. We include three related approaches: examination of primary texts and artifacts; analysis of the ideas and activities that have contributed to the development of various religions; and interdisciplinary exploration of the theories and methods used in the study of religion. It should be stressed that the program is oriented toward the academic analysis of religious phenomena and is not intended to promote or endorse either religious belief itself or the views and practices of any particular religious tradition. The program utilizes resources from several areas of study, including Anthropology, Classics, English, Hebrew and Judaic studies, History, Medieval and Renaissance studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Music, and Philosophy.

The study of religion affords an opportunity to develop skills in understanding and interpreting the expressions of human beings. It challenges presuppositions, stereotypes, "sacred cows" and unquestioned images. It sharpens the capacity to explain the significant role religion plays in politics, historical and social processes and in the arts. It can build bridges between alternative world views and separate fact from fiction, history from myth, and truth from perception. The department's greatest strengths are in Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism (particularly in Europe, North America and East Asia). We offer programs leading to the B.A. , the M.A.
