W elcome to the Department of Religious Studies. The Department of Religious Studies sees itself as a community of scholars serving the University community and the local community by teaching, research, criticism, and action. The main concern of the department is the understanding and elucidation of the Judaeo-Christian religious experience as it is exemplified in the Roman Catholic tradition. This implies not only a deep investigation of the Roman Catholic position but also a dialogue with other Christian denominations and with other world religions. Through its participation in the Sanders Judaic Studies Program, the department offers special courses in this area. It also engages in interdisciplinary studies. Questions about meaning and value form the core of higher education in general and the humanities in particular. Philosophy and religion have been the principal disciplines through which such questions have been raised, examined, and evaluated through the centuries.
Courses in philosophical and religious inquiry have been taught at LSU since the founding of the university. The Department of Philosophy was organized as a separate academic unit in the 1930s, and a separate Religious Studies Program in 1980. The department took its present name in 1997.
The department offers a wide range of courses dealing with fundamental philosophical questions and with the history of philosophy. The curriculum in religious studies is designed to examine general questions regarding the nature of religion through the study of religious literature and religious practice, and to foster a better understanding and appreciation of religion as a universal component of the human experience. The department offers a major and a minor in philosophy and a concentration (equivalent to a major) and minor in religious studies.

The Department is located in 106 Coates Hall. Click onto the image for a campus locator map.

Our Program
Majoring in religious studies provides an opportunity to explore and analyze the great written and oral traditions of the world's religions:
  • Hinduism Buddhism Judaism Christianity Islam Contemporary groups in the U.S. African religions.
The Program
The major introduces students to the academic study of religion. The religious studies major offers a broad choice of courses, including:history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, American studies, classics, and medieval studies. For some students, religious studies is an appropriate second major and might combine well with anything from philosophy to international agricultural development, from history to international relations. Religious studies also has four options for minor programs: religious studies, Asian religions, Judaism, and Christian studies. Career Alternatives
The emphasis in religious studies courses on developing analytical thinking skills and clear written expression is an asset for many career goals. As a strong liberal arts program, the major can lead to research and/or teaching on all levels, as well as careers in related areas such as the ministry, counseling, social work, and other helping professions. Because the major integrates so many academic areas, it is also an excellent background for graduate programs, especially in the humanities, and for professional schools including law, business, and foreign service.
