Since issues pertaining to religion and interfaith matters have always had a special place within the regular meeting program of the Palestinian Academic Society for the Study of International Affairs (PASSIA), and realizing the increasing need for improving the understanding between the various religious communities, PASSIA, in early 1998, decided to establish a Religious Studies Unit, devoted to inter-religious dialogue and activities. In view of the fact that in Palestine and Israel the encounter between people of different religious traditions take place in the close proximity of cities and neighborhoods, it is the unit's primary aim to address this religious diversity by focusing on the role and significance of religion for the people and promoting understanding and respect of others. We've tried to maintain most of the original structure of the site, which models the way the humanities are organized for research and teaching as well as the way they are adapting to social, cultural, and technological changes. But some shifts in organization and navigation are necessary for technical reasons. ( Navigating and Bookmarking VoS Important : the new VoS is still a work in progress, but we have turned it on because it is already more functional than the original site. There are still some mis-orderings of categories and author names that we are fixing as we convert our legacy resources. We've also temporarily removed as many of the broken links as we could find and will restore them when we can (or find substitutes). Some categories have thus been temporarily decimated. Laurier Home Faculty of Arts Religion and Culture The study of religion at Laurier involves the investigation and analysis of the roles of religion in society and culture as well as in the lives of individuals. This includes textual traditions (as well as ancient languages), art and artifacts, oral traditions, rituals, psychological factors, social movements, and religious personalities from different geographical areas and historical periods, both ancient and modern.
Survey courses explore specific religious traditions such as Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism in their cultural contexts, and specific topics, such as the nature of religious experience and ritual. Advanced undergraduate and graduate seminars examine theoretical frameworks and methodologies, and allow students to do field work.
The Department of Religion and Culture emphasizes the interrelationship of research and teaching, and the ability to communicate clearly, logically and creatively. Small classes allow for close interaction between students and professors, and this dialogue extends outside the classroom.
