LEIS Home : Graduate Information A Brief History of the Program The undergraduate program in Leisure Studies at Oklahoma State University provides professional preparation in recreation and leisure studies with the opportunity to concentrate in two options. These options are Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Services Management. The Bachelor of Science degree in Leisure, established in August of 1973, is designed to give students a broad, basic foundation in professional preparation for careers in recreation and leisure services. The curriculum was expanded in 1976 to provide three emphasis areas for developing greater competencies and included administration and management, Therapeutic Recreation, and outdoor recreation. As the program developed, external accreditation offered the opportunity to evaluate the program according to national standards. The first efforts to meet these national standards began in the early 1980s. The National Recreation and Park Association recognized the undergraduate program with initial accreditation in October 1985 in two options: Therapeutic Recreation and Administration and Management. These options were again reviewed in 1990, 1995 and 2000 as part of the renewal of accreditation. As a result, the program has continued its accreditation by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) in cooperation with the American Association for Leisure and Recreation (AALR) in two options: Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Services Management.
