Graduate Degree Programs in Recreation and Leisure Studies
The department offers the Master of Science in Recreation and Leisure Studies for students interested in advanced professional study in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Services Management . The Department also accommodates individuals interested in the disciplinary aspects of recreation and leisure behavior.
Persons without baccalaureate degrees in recreation and leisure studies are welcome into the graduate program but, on an individualized basis, are advised into undergraduate-level classes as prerequisites to graduate study. The Master of Science consists of a common core of 24 credits in recreation and leisure-related philosophical, behavioral, statistics, and research courses. Professionally experienced graduate students select an appropriate graduate elective, while others complete a graduate internship at an approved site. The remainder of the core is either the completion of a research project or the completion of a master's thesis. Further, an additional six credits in one of our two areas of concentration enable a more thorough understanding of the substance and theory of therapeutic recreation or recreation and leisure services management.

CAREER POTENTIAL
Higher standards of living and advances in technology have given people more opportunities to play, to relax or to pursue a hobby or sport. As a result, a profession has emerged to help people use their leisure time to enrich their lives. Recreation programs can be found in large institutions and in small community centers. Recreation professionals work in state and municipal parks, YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, sports programs, health clubs, the military, corporations, and in the private sector. They also work at theme parks, tourist attractions and resorts. They organize a variety of leisure activities, including arts and crafts, fitness, sports and special events.

In the Sports Studies Department students are educated and trained to meet the needs of a modern and expanding industry. People are spending more time and money on recreation and leisure, creating a shortage of qualified personnel within the sport, leisure and fitness industry. We aim to address this demand by providing quality education and training to deaf and hearing-impaired people. As well as providing students with sport and leisure qualifications, we offer additional essential training that equips students with transferable skills relevant to further or higher education or employment. The combination of the College’s excellent facilities and its close proximity to many of the education and leisure centres in the local area, successfully prepares students for work in this diverse industry.
