Welcome to the University of Hartford Psychology Department! The Department of Psychology at the University of Hartford is committed to engaging students in the scientific study of humans and animal behavior, cognition, and emotion, and how to apply that knowledge to solve human and organizational problems. Major emphasis is placed on the development of critical thinking and analytical skills so that students will become adept at formulating meaningful questions about human behavior and problems, and at devising sound and integrative strategies for answering those questions, including those that derive from the humanities and related natural and social sciences. Both basic research and applied aspects of the discipline are represented in the curriculum to achieve the goal of developing well-rounded, resourceful, and informed graduates motivated to participate actively in the intellectual, social, and political life of their community and to conduct themselves constructively and generously in their private lives. The Department of Psychology at the University of Hartford emphasizes teaching and commitment to scholarship. The Faculty of the Department strive to be responsive to the changing needs of students and the marketplace. These needs are addressed through the continual development of new courses and programs which are designed to reflect current perspectives and issues within psychology.

145. A SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
A tour through social psychology from the naturenurture debate through to thepsychology of urbanisation, all from a sociological perspective.
http://www.trinity.edu/~mkearl/socpsy.html
S OCIAL P SYCHOLOGY
The social sciences are dedicated to understanding the human condition, ideally to the extent that the singular and collective behaviors of human beings can be understood and even predicted. Though their goals are identical in the abstract, these "sciences" differ in terms of their way of looking at things, the questions they ask, the methods they use in addressing these questions, and what they do with this information once they obtain it. Amid this multitude of social science disciplines is social psychology which, as can be inferred from its label, involves the ways in which both social and mental processes determine action. What, precisely, this means research-wise, however, remains a matter of historic debate both between and within the disciplines of psychology and sociology. What weight is to be given to the social, the psychological, and the interaction between the two? What does the interaction between psychological and sociological processes even mean? I n approaching the problem of why some people do certain things

Mental Models Website
A Gentle Introduction
The mental model theory of thinking and reasoning is the focus of this Web site. Mental models are representations in the mind of real or imaginary situations.
Scientists sometimes use the term "mental model" as a synonym for "mental representation", but it has a narrower referent in the case of the theory of thinking and reasoning.
Kenneth Craik
The idea that people rely on mental models can be traced back to Kenneth Craik’s suggestion in 1943 that the mind constructs "small-scale models" of reality that it uses to anticipate events. Mental models can be constructed from perception, imagination, or the comprehension of discourse. They underlie visual images, but they can also be abstract, representing situations that cannot be visualised. Each mental model represents a possibility. Mental models are akin to architects' models or to physicists' diagrams in that their structure is analogous to the structure of the situation that they represent, unlike, say, the structure of logical forms used in formal rule theories. In this respect they are a little like pictures in the "picture" theory of language described by Ludwig Wittgenstein in 1922. Cognitive scientists have explored mental models and the mind generally. They have carried out an extensive programme of study on

Mind is the forerunner of all (evil) conditions.
Mind is their chief, and they are mind-made.
If, with an impure mind, one speaks or acts, Then suffering follows one Even as the cart wheel follows the hoof of the ox. Mind is the forerunner of all (good) conditions. Mind is their chief, and they are mind-made. If, with a pure mind, one speaks or acts, Then happiness follows one Like a never-departing shadow.

MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGICAL INSTRUMENTATION
MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY
Upper Montclair, NJ 07043
Professors: Edward J. Haupt (1936-2001) and Thomas B. Perera
(Dr. Haupt died of cancer in February, 2001) This museum is dedicated to the PRESERVATION of historical psychological lore, and instrumentation. It consists of an On-Line Cyber-Museum with downloadable illustrations showing collections of early psychological laboratory research apparatus. As the museum develops, frequent additions will be made to expand the depth and completeness of the coverage of the field of psychology. A bibliography from the University of Toronto internet museum is included which gives relevant publications and other internet links.
Starting with an early German catalog of psychological and physiological apparatus, the museum is growing by developing historical threads that trace the development of knowledge in the major areas of psychological inquiry and show the apparatus associated with each area.
One of these threads traces the development of research into the human reaction time. You can follow this reaction time thread by clicking on:
