Purpose and History
The stated purpose of the SPP is to promote interaction between philosophers, psychologists and other cognitive scientists on issues of common concern. The SPP held its first meeting October 24-26, 1974 at MIT. It met for a second time Spring 1976 at Cornell University. At this second meeting, conferees passed a constitution and elected officers . Jerry Fodor, then of MIT, was the first SPP president. Since then, SPP has held annual meetings on a regular basis. Those interested in seeing how the society has progressed over the last 28 years might want to look over programs of past meetings
Membership
Membership in the SPP is open to anyone interested in joining. Paying annual dues entitles one to membership for that academic year. Annual membership dues are $25.00 per academic year (August-July); student dues are $5.00. Dues are payable at the beginning of each academic year (August). A membership application form is available for your use. Members are entitled to vote on all issues at the annual business meeting (including election of officers), three mailings per year, and subscription to the SPP e-mail list server.

The Evolutionary Psychology FAQ
Last updated September 8, 2004.
This FAQ is written and maintained by Edward Hagen , formerly of the Center for Evolutionary Psychology, University of California, Santa Barbara, and now at the Institute for Theoretical Biology in Berlin. The FAQ assumes a basic knowledge of genes and natural selection. Its purpose is to outline the foundations of evolutionary psychology. These foundations are extremely robust (though not beyond criticism). The status of specific hypotheses (e.g., mate selection preferences, cheater detection modules) is more debatable, and will not be discussed in detail here. In addition, I address many of the common misconceptions about evolutionary psychology. This FAQ draws upon the work of many individuals. Comments and criticisms regarding it are welcome: e.hagen@biologie.hu-berlin.de . A Russian translation of this FAQ is also available. Frequently asked questions:
  • What is evolutionary psychology? What is the EEA and why is it important? (general answer) What is the EEA? (detailed answer) Isn't it true that we can't know what happened in the distant past, so the EEA concept is useless? ...

NEW VIDEO - Brief therapy for depression Radical Psychology Television makes programmes exploring new organising ideas in psychology, particularly those that help improve our understanding of why the human brain and behaviour evolved the way they did and that have practical implications for medicine and psychotherapy The huge variety of mind found in humanity are the sum result of the way our genetic inheritance – the human givens (expressed as physical and emotional needs) – have interacted with the environment. NEW - from the journal
    Human givens
Mental health is the result of our emotional and physical needs being met well – using the resources nature gave us. When they are not met well, for whatever reason, individuals and families experience stress overload with an increase in various expressions of emotional arousal – anger, anxiety, trauma, depression, greed and addiction. This can lead, in turn, to illness and social problems that impact on the whole of society. Improving our understanding of the new information around these issues, and how to help people cope better with the pressures of the modern world, are the aims behind these videos of seminars, therapy sessions and explanatory documentaries. available now in production now coming soon who are we ... the journal
