Educating for Peace works with the school system to build a peaceful, just and sustainable world for our children. We know that peace education helps students to transform conflict in their own lives, understand and respect other cultures and ways of living, and treasure the Earth. Teachers of peace education encourage their students to cooperate with each other, think critically, solve problems constructively, take part in responsible decision-making, communicate clearly, share their feelings and commitments openly. These skills and values are essential for survival in an increasingly interdependent world, where violence has become an instrument of policy, yet still breeds more violence.
Think about what kind of world you want to live and work in. What do you need to know to build that world? Demand that your teachers teach you that.

Peace and Conflict Studies: White Paper
The Peace and Conflict Studies major prepares students to understand the dynamics of peace and conflict and to contribute to the creation of more just and peaceable conditions in the world. Courses focus on the understanding of conflict, the history of peace efforts, conflict resolution, human rights, and world order. The founding premise of Peace and Conflict Studies is that war and other forms of violence are not inevitable or ineradicable, despite their omnipresence in human history. Through critical theory and interdisciplinary method much can be learned about the causes of conflict and conditions of peace at all levels upon which the discipline of peace studies has focussed-intra- and interpersonal, societal, international, and global-and this knowledge can assist future generations to put into practice just and sustainable principles locally and globally.

The Center was dedicated on November 20, 1965 as part of the University's School of Education and Graduate Studies program. Professor Russell Broadhead served as its first Director, and the mission was to provide interdisciplinary, university wide academic programs in the field of domestic and international conflict and peace issues. Today, the mission of CPCS is to develop and implement projects, programs, curricula, research and publications in areas of scholarship related to international and domestic peace, war, social justice, arms control, globalization, multicultural awareness and constructive conflict resolution.
