Welcome to America's Global College Forum. This weekly series profiles international students attending one of America's great colleges or universities giving them an opportunity to share a glimpse of their life in the United States. Zamira Yusufjonova Having a desire to help create peace in her homeland, Tajikistan, Zamira Yusufjonova decided to attend the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame. She learned about the Kroc Institute 2 years ago when she taught a course in conflict resolution and human rights at a summer camp in Tajikistan. "The children in my course refused to talk to each other and if they came from different regions from their own country they would barely even acknowledge each other, reproducing the tensions that exist in the country," she says. "This experience confirmed my determination to make peace studies the focus of my education."

Peace Studies
Peace Studies Minor Coordinator : Tansa G. Massoud There are over 160 higher learning institutions offering peace studies programs in the United States and over 500 colleges around the world. The United States government gave official recognition to the field of peace studies in 1984 when it established the U.S. Institute of Peace. In 1987, the Peace Studies Association, a professional academic body, was established. In addition, the field is represented by the Consortium on Peace Research, Education, and Development (COPRED). There are at least six scholarly journals devoted to peace studies. Peace studies is an interdisciplinary field of study housed primarily in the social sciences. Other labels for peace studies include "peace and conflict studies", "peace and justice studies", and "conflict analysis and resolution." Peace studies explores the causes and nature of human conflict from the interpersonal to the global level. Historically, peace studies programs concentrated on "negative peace" or absence of war. Today, more attention is devoted to the concept of "positive peace" promoting social, political, and economic justice. A partial list of topics under peace studies includes violence, war, ethnic conflict, conflict management, conflict resolution, peace making, law, human rights, values, justice, environment, racism, sexism, and nonviolence. Normatively, the goal of peace studies is to promote a more just and peaceful world.

As the world grows smaller with globalization, faster modes of travel and expanding international relations, the need for students in the field of peace studies is more demanding. The peace studies program at ULV combines a strong background in peacemaking and conflict resolution with interdisciplinary courses of the student's major. Through this approach students will not only learn about pertinent issues within the field of peace studies, but most importantly how to relate those lessons back to their traditional area of study. Students will examine the process of engagement between the individual and the human and natural environments in context that affirms mutual welfare and cooperative security by:
  • Evaluating a range of definitions of peace from the most exclusive to
the most inclusive. Gaining knowledge of a variety of approaches to peace making. Developing their own personal position on peace and peacemaking.

Dr. Edward J. McGlynn, Director "Peace is not merely the absence of war…
but… is rightly and appropriately called
‘an enterprise of justice’”
-Isaiah 32:17
(Pastoral Constitution #78 Vatican II) Description of Courses Peace Studies at Siena is a multi-disciplinary scholarly, practical, and
personal pursuit that examines many social justice topics, such as the origins, causes, and justifications of war and other systems of state, group, and interpersonal violence; a just world community; global environmental concerns; intercultural understanding; and non-violent alternatives to injustice, violence and war.
The Siena College Peace Studies program is inspired by Jewish and Christian principles of peace and justice and the values and example of Francis of Assisi, who encouraged humans to be peacemakers not only in their own lives but in the world at large. This vision of peace and justice can be found in many life-affirming religious and philosophical traditions, and has informed the words and actions of many peacemakers, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dorothy Day.
The program subscribes to the following general principles articulated
by Joseph Fahey in Education for Justice and Peace
  • Peace education must be solidly academic in nature: scholarly research is basic to the program, and students are strongly encouraged to consider as many perspectives as possible, not solely that of peace researchers.

    The Academic Program
Peace and conflict education (PACE) studies examines the causes of war and other forms of violence, the nonviolent ways to resolve destructive conflicts and engage in peacemaking, and the conditions necessary for creating a positive peace. As an interdisciplinary field, PACE finds its center in the social sciences, but it also extends to the humanities and the natural and physical sciences. PACE students learn critical thinking related to issues of justice, conflict resolution, security and peace, and steps to effect these goals, including the making and evaluating of policies. Students taking these courses go on to careers in diplomacy (including the UN and its affiliates), Third World aid and development (research, administration, and fieldwork), mediation services, public relations, defense planning, management operations, industrial relations, education (teaching and administration), welfare and public interest work, journalism, service industries, and, of course, the fields of peace and conflict research, peace education, and peace advocacy. The development of perspectives and skills in peace, justice, and conflict resolution are relevant in the general areas of private business, the arts, national and international nongovernmental organizations, and national, regional and international government bodies.

Getting Started ... Links “This is the area of study I've been looking for all my life!” said one new student. What makes Peace and Conflict Studies (PAX) attractive or exciting is both its content and application. Parents, school teachers, those interested in legal questions and justice, others interested in social work, child care, ecotourism, or concerned with the health of the workplace or violence on the streets and around the world; all can benefit from the sound academic examination of patterns of peace and conflicts. The understanding and application of alternative and constructive paths and the resolution of conflict whether in the family, playground, workplace, or within and between nations, is also an integral part of the program. We treat the content of courses and the way they are taught with equal care. The concern is to teach in a manner consistent with the building of just and democratic structures. Because Peace and Conflict Studies is interdisciplinary in nature students receive the benefit of the contributions of many disciplines and the research skills and interests of a number of Mount Saint Vincent's dedicated faculty members. 166 Bedford Highway, Halifax, N.S. , B3M 2J6, (902) 457-6117

The Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation For World Peace
Welcome to the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace. The Foundation, based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, traces its origins to 1988 when observances of the anniversary of Gandhi's birth were so well received by the people of Edmonton that the initiators launched plans to enlarge the annual observances, to memorialize Gandhi and to share his teachings through a national foundation to be known as the "Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace."
