In October 2003, USD received from the estate of Joan B. Kroc one of the largest gifts ever given for the study of peace: a $50 million endowment to establish the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.
Funds from this endowment will educate and train graduate students in peace and conflict studies, support the addition of professional staff and faculty with recognized expertise in peace studies, and expand the Institute's work in peacemaking and peacebuilding.
"We are eternally grateful to Mrs. Kroc for this gift. Her contributions to the University will continue her legacy for many years to come by educating students committed to her vision of building a more peaceful and just world," said President Mary Lyons. "Peace and conflict studies, social justice, and concern for humanity lie at the foundation of our identity as a Catholic institution. The Institute for Peace & Justice draws upon Catholic social teaching that sees peace as inseparable from justice and acts to prevent and resolve conflicts that threaten local, national and international peace."
"Creation of a School of Peace Studies is groundbreaking, giving prominence to a field of study still relatively young, but so desperately needed in today's world. This gift will permit us to attract the finest international scholars and practitioners to teach, research, and conduct the work of peacemaking," said Dr. Joyce Neu, Executive Director of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice. "Having had the privilege of knowing Mrs. Kroc, I believe her presence will be felt for generations to come as we move forward to celebrate her life by, in her words, 'not only talking about peace, but making peace," said Dr. Neu. Before her death, Mrs. Kroc said, "Now they will know I'm serious about peace!"

The Justice and Peace Studies Program at the University of St. Thomas is an interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students to be responsible critics of contemporary societies and effective agents for positive social transformation. The two core courses for the minor, and the pattern of requirements for the major, make use of four stages (the "Circle of Praxis" ): (1) experience (actual and vicarious) of poverty and injustice; (2) descriptive analysis (study of the economic, political, and social realities of a culture, and the historical events that produced those realities); (3) normative analysis (moral judgment on existing society, study of alternative possibilities for that society, and analysis of the moral values at stake); and (4) action possibilities (Strategies and skills for transforming society from its present condition to a better condition including a variety of strategies such as those outlined in the "Social Change Wheel"). While the two core courses for the minor integrate all four of these stages, JPST 250 concentrates on descriptive analysis and THEO 305 concentrates on normative analysis. The additional three core courses for the major, JPST 340, 470, and 472 concentrate on action possibilities.

PAOLI, Pennsylvania (Reuters) Colman McCarthy loves the long-shot. Good thing, too, because the journalist-turned-peace activist is betting that warlike humanity will some day evolve into enlightened creatures guided by love and harmony. "We can't be the final product of evolution, unless there's some kind of cosmic sick-joke going on," McCarthy chuckled after treating a classroom of sleepy teen-age boys to a varied discussion about gun violence, forgiveness and U.S. foreign policy. For years now, the bespectacled 64-year-old has been trying to get American educators to see violence as learned behavior that can be overcome by adding comprehensive peace studies programs to the curriculum at the nation's 80,000 elementary schools, 26,000 high schools and 3,100 colleges. "People who are going to be on death row are now in first- or second-grade, and so are people who are going to be in the White House. If we don't teach them peace, someone else will teach them violence," he told Reuters during a recent visit to an Episcopal-run prep school in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Peace Studies
Peace Studies is an interdisciplinary department that explores the presence and nature of conflict in human interaction, the causes of war and intergroup violence, the methods of violence and nonviolence, and the conditions for sustainable peace. The purpose of the department is to examine these subjects through the methods offered through the humanities and social sciences. Throughout our program students and faculty explore the potential for better conflict management, peacemaking processes, reconciliation and peacebuilding given the present historical circumstances. Specific approaches that are investigated include: nonviolent social protest; alternative approaches to security; international law and organization; and mediation and conflict resolution. The peace studies program encourages students to think and act with responsible human freedom and to be capable of effective service to others. Inside and outside of the classroom the Peace Studies Department seeks to cultivate an environment for learning which draws its deepest inspiration from a desire for the truth, for justice and for charity. Practitioners in the field of peace studies are aware that any concrete situation reflects multiple issues. Effective peacemaking and conflict resolution thus requires an ability to synthesize the strands involved in the conflict, including gender and ethnicity, economics and environment, religion and philosophy, culture and government, history and literature, psychology and social structure. The interdisciplinary character of the department looks to synthesize these strands. Building upon the six required courses, the student majoring in peace studies, in close consultation with a department advisor, focuses his/her interest by looking at conflict and its resolution through detailed study in the social sciences, the humanities or the natural sciences. The commitment to community-based education is evidenced by the internships and service learning activities that peace studies majors and minors undertake.

What is Peace Studies? The Peace Studies discipline seeks to provide the intellectual structure for nonviolent approaches to personal, national, and global conflicts. Direct violence emerges from structural, cultural, and personal patterns that support it. Thus, sustainable peace requires more than the ending of direct violence, but also the building of cooperative structures, creative cultures, and conflict resolution capacities in human relationships. In the twenty-first century, the problem of violence exists on multiple levels, from domestic abuse and entrenched poverty to international armed conflict, terrorism and counter-terrorism. We face the prospect of a nuclear conflagration on one side, with the daily reality of low-technology conflicts in dozens of countries on another. In the organized violence of warfare, far more civilians die than soldiers; small arms destroy more than sophisticated weaponry, and war-related poverty, displacement, and disease are the biggest killers of all. Moreover, in refugee camps and urban communities alike, the pervasive incidence of violence within families and communities feeds and is fed by violence in its other forms. Peace Studies students analyze historical, philosophical, socio-cultural, political-economic and psychological influences that often lead to violent conflict, and the nonviolent alternative pathways toward sustainable peace. In both classroom and experiential learning, students are invited to think critically about our world, to act creatively, and to fashion their own and our collective future in a holistic and supportive educational environment.

Peace Studies
Peace Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study which addresses the problems of war, social oppression and violence, and the challenges of implementing nonviolent conflict resolution and social justice. Peace Studies serves to focus knowledge from diverse disciplines to converge on the problems of violence and the challenges of finding peaceful solutions. The Peace Studies program strongly recommends study or work abroad for its students to gain international awareness and experience. Many institutions with which Gustavus has an official affiliation offer courses in the areas of peace and conflict resolution studies which could be substituted for Gustavus courses (up to two) and applied toward the Peace Studies minor.
Students are encouraged to consult with the following faculty who serve as resource persons and advisors in the various disciplines that contribute to the minor in Peace Studies: Gregory Mason (English), Karen Larson (Interdisciplinary Studies), Mimi Gerstbauer and Richard Leitch (Political Science), Suzanne Wilson (Sociology/Anthropology).

    Description of the Programme
The Master of Arts programme in International Peace Studies is designed to enable students from diverse cultures and backgrounds to attain a deep understanding of the central issues of peace and security which will determine the future of humanity. Through their coursework, participants in the programme will broaden their base of knowledge and will engage with the major concepts, themes, and debates within international peace and conflict studies, preparing themselves for work with NGOs, governments, aid agencies, the UN and other organizations where a deep understanding of these issues is critical. The programme is intensive. It will be accomplished in three terms: from September to December 2003; from January to May 2004; and from June to August 2004. The programme includes a number of compulsory courses, a major specialization, and an elective, for a total of 47 credits. Specializations are offered in three focal areas of international peace studies: Economic Development and Peace, Environmental Security, and Conflict Management. During the first term of the Master of Arts Programme, students must specify which of these specializations they wish to follow. During the second term, students will choose one of several elective courses offered as part of their degree programme. In addition to completing the necessary course work, to obtain the Master of Arts in International Peace Studies, students must complete a substantial MA thesis.
