A Certificate Program
1. Peace Studies at FAU
The certificate program in Peace Studies at FAU provides students with an opportunity to explore the field of peace studies with an interdisciplinary perspective. The Peace Studies Certificate is open to all degree-seeking students, and is designed to be taken concurrently with a major.
The goal of the Peace Studies Certificate is to educate students on the various causes of conflict and obstacles to peace. Courses offered within the program address the concept of peace from different perspectives, underscoring the complexities of the concept of peace and the difficulties achieving it on both a global and local level. To reflect this complexity and address student interests, individual students can tailor-make their program curriculum in consultation with the Director by choosing from a list of courses offered by a number of different departments.

Graduate Certificate in Peace Studies The Graduate Certificate Program in Peace Studies offers interdisciplinary graduate studies for life-long learners who want to become familiar and skilled in the discourse of peace studies. This program offers an opportunity to gain a broad understanding of various aspects of peace building and conflict resolution skills. Areas of study include the history and theory of international and domestic conflict; the political, economic, cultural, and social roots of such conflict; the causes and conduct of warfare; violence prevention; and global institutions for the resolution of conflict. The Graduate Certificate is a 24-credit program. Students can tailor the Graduate Certificate to their interests. The program is offered in both on-campus and online formats. These flexible formats allow mid career working adults and those unable to attend the on-campus program, to study in a creative, rigorous, and structured fashion. Students enrolled in the online program participate in Residential Institutes on the Fort Lauderdale campus twice per year, as well as online Web-based courses.
Students may enroll full or part time, taking three to nine credit hours per trimester. Students who attend full-time can expect to complete the program in 10 months. Part-time students will complete the program in 19 months. Summer attendance is mandatory.

    Program and Concentration
The Peace Studies Program is concerned with analyzing the alternative ways that may be used to transform individual behavior, national policy, and human institutions in order to promote peace and justice in the world. The program promotes discussion and study on issues of conflict and its management, within the lives of individuals, societies, and the world at large. It sponsors research on meditation, mediation, negotiation, and ways to reduce violence, build diverse communities, and use nonviolent action to defend human rights and promote justice. Undergraduates may concentrate in peace studies to complement any major. Students may also design a major in peace studies via the University’s self-designed major. The concentration draws together the knowledge of several disciplines in the context of the search for peace, while enhancing students’ critical thinking skills and awareness of the connections between local and global issues. Departments and programs represented in peace studies include economics, government, history, international development, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.

PAOLI, Pennsylvania (Reuters) Colman McCarthy loves the long-shot. Good thing, too, because the journalist-turned-peace activist is betting that warlike humanity will some day evolve into enlightened creatures guided by love and harmony. "We can't be the final product of evolution, unless there's some kind of cosmic sick-joke going on," McCarthy chuckled after treating a classroom of sleepy teen-age boys to a varied discussion about gun violence, forgiveness and U.S. foreign policy. For years now, the bespectacled 64-year-old has been trying to get American educators to see violence as learned behavior that can be overcome by adding comprehensive peace studies programs to the curriculum at the nation's 80,000 elementary schools, 26,000 high schools and 3,100 colleges. "People who are going to be on death row are now in first- or second-grade, and so are people who are going to be in the White House. If we don't teach them peace, someone else will teach them violence," he told Reuters during a recent visit to an Episcopal-run prep school in the Philadelphia suburbs.

      Dr. Margaret Groarke, Director
Manhattan College has one of the oldest Peace Studies programs in the United States. The first course was offered in 1966, and work began on designing a major, which was established in 1971.
If you are interested in studying issues related to peace, conflict and war, human rights and social justice, Peace Studies may be the major for you.
The Nature of Peace Studies Peace Studies at Manhattan College is an interdisciplinary academic program that examines the following problem/opportunity areas:
    • Arms Races and War Economic, Political, and Social Justice Conflict Creation, Management, and Resolution Nonviolent Philosophies and Strategies of Resistance World Community and World Government
The courses are taught by faculty members from fourteen disciplines and several Schools of the College. Faculty are drawn from the physical and life sciences, the social sciences, the applied sciences, and the humanities. Central to our concept of peace studies is the notion of justice. We recognize a difference between "negative peace" - the absence of open hostilities - and "positive peace" - a situation of just and harmonious relations between individuals and/or peoples. We cannot achieve true peace, positive peace, without justice.
Manhattan College offers Peace Studies as a major or minor field of study leading to the B.A. degree, and as a Certificate program for those who have already earned a bachelor's degree. Many students interested in Peace Studies pair it with another academic discipline, and complete a double major. Peace Studies is housed in the School of Arts, but is also available as a minor for the students in the School of Science, Business, and Engineering, and as a second concentration in the School of Education.
