Peace Studies is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the questions of why violence occurs and how conflicts may be resolved or settled short of violence. Because violence often occurs as a result of conflicts related to economic and social inequalities, issues of justice are also considered a key component of the Peace Studies field.
Undergraduate programs in Peace Studies have been around since after World War II. The University of North Texas joins more than 200 colleges and universities nationwide in offering Peace Studies. The Peace Studies Program at UNT is unique in that there are no other programs in Texas or the Southwest offering an undergraduate major or minor in Peace Studies. Beginning in the Fall of 2003, students can choose Peace Studies as their primary concentration in the International Studies Major
An interdisciplinary minor in this growing field allows students to adjust their course work to best fit their major field. With Peace Studies courses in Political Science, Anthropology, Communications, Economics, History, and Sociology, a major or minor in Peace Studies is a perfect supplement to any undergraduate education.
The Peace Studies Program at UNT also offers several scholarships for students who major or minor in Peace Studies. There are a number of options Peace Studies graduates can pursue, such as a career in the foreign service; in an international organization; in international or human-rights law; in corporations that invest overseas; or in non-governmental organizations working in human rights, development, environmental protection, or conflict resolution.

    INTRODUCTION TO PEACE STUDIES Ken Blanchard, noted professor and author of the One Minute Manager and Situational Leadership series of training materials, suggests giving students the 'final exam' questions at the start of the course and then teaching how to arrive at the answers - his formula for win/win learning. That is what I wish to do here, by providing the highlights of what you will find in our web site and related materials. Highlights: "The Canadian Peace Initiative (“CPI”) is a process to simply provide the venues, support and guidance to ‘Open Space to Open Minds to Peace’. The CPI process is open, transparent, patient and committed, drawing people from all walks of life, freeing them from their stasis and mobilizing them. All members of the Culture of Peace movement have to be leaders in their own right, drawing on their own potential and inner strengths, galvanizing, inspiring and energizing the peace movement. Everyone is a peace leader and peace educator. Every day we must take ownership of ourselves and our relationships: we can do anything we set our minds and hearts to; we do no harm, expect and demand no harm be done to us or others; no one is better than another;

    T he Middle East, Bosnia, Oklahoma City, Central America, the streets of Chicago. The world is awash with violence and conflict. The 20th Century has seen far more soldiers and civilians die in warfare than in any other century. Our cities and suburban regions, too, are hit by frighteningly high levels of violence. Systemic poverty grinds away at healthy community life in certain urban and rural districts even as sexism continues to support patterns of violence against women. Likewise, the last 40 years have seen an upsurge in humanity's impact on the natural biosphere. Advances in technological, industrial and agricultural power have changed patterns of production and consumption and increased humanity's conflict with basic ecological balances on the earth. Given the pervasiveness of contemporary violence and conflict, it is imperative to explore patterns of conflict resolution and peacemaking grounded in commitments to social justice. Loyola's Peace Studies Minor Program is the only such program in the Chicago area. It focuses on three distinct spheres of violence, conflict, and peacemaking: international, societal and ecological. Peace Studies offers an intergrated examination of violence and conflict in these diverse spheres, the linkages between and among these different patterns of violence, and modes of conflict resolution and peacemaking pertinent to each sphere. If you want an interesting program of engaged education focused on significant concerns of everyday relevance, then consider minoring in the Peace Studies program located:

    Academic peace, justice and conflict studies (PJCS) programs include a major in peace, justice and conflict studies with two concentrations: (1) conflict in communities and organizations; (2) peace and justice. A peace, justice and conflict studies minor is offered which enables a student to combine peace, justice and conflict studies content with any recognized major, for example, art, the natural sciences, social work, etc.

Rooted in Anabaptist-Mennonite theology and history, peace, justice and conflict studies has a long history at Goshen College emphasizing action-reflection learning in addition to more traditioinal classroom opportunities.

    Michael Klare ... Links GRADUATE EDUCATION GUIDE A-C D-K L-P R-W ... Fellowships A growing number of American universities offer graduate education in peace and conflict studies. Most of these programs have appeared since 1970, and are affiliated with departments or schools of sociology, political science, psychology, law, or theology. Graduates of these programs generally receive Masters or professional degrees, although recent years have seen a steady increase in the number of doctoral programs. Some of these programs confer their own degrees, but more often they are constituted as a "concentration" within a traditional discipline (such as sociology), or as the focus of an interdisciplinary degree.
    Just as undergraduate peace studies programs vary in their approach and structure, a diverse group of graduate programs falls within the parameters of this Guide. These programs can be divided into six broad areas, although many graduate programs also combine elements of two or more of these areas:
    Peace and justice in the religious context

    General peace and conflict studies

    Mediation and conflict resolution

    Citizen participation in socioeconomic development
    ...
    Public interest law and alternative dispute resolution
    Peace and Justice in the Religious Context
    The earliest graduate programs in peace studies were established by religious institutions, particularly the historic peace churches (the Brethren, Mennonites, and Society of Friends). Most of these programs still exist, offering a curriculum that combines theological perspectives on peace and justice, a commitment to social activism, and an emphasis on the relevance of ethical behavior to relations between groups and societies. Graduates of these programs, who receive Masters or Doctoral degrees, usually pursue careers in the ministry, in education, or in community-based social justice organizations.

    The purpose of the Master of Arts: Peace Studies (MAPS) program is to provide the environment for a deepening understanding of and commitment to the biblical vision of peace and justice and its embodiment in the world. The program is grounded in the assumption that Christ calls us to become part of a new community whose mission is to participate in God's reconciling work throughout the world. While not designed for a specific profession, the MAPS program prepares students for peace and justice ministries from congregational to worldwide levels. The principal thrust of the MAPS program since its inception has been reflection on the biblical, historical, and theological foundations of peace and justice. Attention is also given to experiential learning, contemporary social ethics, and the contribution of the social sciences to peace- and justice-making. The MAPS faculty seeks to take seriously the hermeneutic that knowledge grows out of obedience and obedience grows from hearing the Word. They are thus committed to assisting students in the integration of action, reflection, and prayer. Length of course
    Completion of the program will normally require two full academic years (60 hours), including Interterm and/or some summer school. Depending upon the student's academic background, the Curriculum Committee may approve a shorter period of time upon petition and recommendation of the student's adviser and the MA director.
