    About the Institute
From the beginning the Institute interpreted its role broadly. Over the years, researchers have probed the political, military, historical, legal, economic, moral, psychological, and philosophical dimensions of international relations. Although the Institute does not take official positions on any public policy issues, individual members of SIWPS contribute to the general discourse on these topics by
authoring articles in journals such as Foreign Affairs, discussing current issues with officials and journalists, serving as consultants to government departments and agencies, and testifying before Congressional committees.
The Institute itself has no formal teaching program; rather, its members conduct a wide variety of instructional activities through the Political Science Department and the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia. Institute members offer courses on American foreign policy, national security, international politics, political economy, environmental policy, and international organization.
In addition to offering courses, SIWPS Director Richard Betts coordinates the International Security Policy Concentration for SIPA, and Professor Robert Jervis serves as Deputy Chair of the Department of Political Science.

Peace Studies is concerned with war and peace, violence and nonviolence, conflict and conflict transformation. Peace researchers also study concepts of justice and the ways in which people organize and wage conflict to achieve what they perceive as just ends. By focusing attention on problems of conflict, particularly of a violent nature, researchers attempt to improve our methods of analyzing and dealing with these problems. Peace studies is an interdisciplinary field, encompassing subject areas from the Faculties of Science and Social Sciences as well as Humanities.

    Social Justice and Peace Studies
The Social Justice and Peace Studies program encourages critical reflection on structural injustices locally and globally and calls for social action to transform the world in the interests of equity and the pursuit of peace.
This innovative cross-disciplinary program offers one of four core courses in social justice and peace in each of the four years leading to a degree. These core courses are combined with existing courses drawn from a variety of disciplines such as sociology, politics, economics, history, social work, religious studies, and others. There is a mandatory service component in second year that engages students in local issues of Social Justice and Peace and an optional overseas or cross-cultural service component offering a variety of opportunities that may be undertaken at any time after first year. Course credit can be arranged for these experiences.
While this degree can be pursued independently, students are strongly encouraged to combine their degree in Social Justice and Peace with a Major or Minor in social science, arts, or science. The program is designed to make it easy to do this.

US Hyper-muscle / A Balance Of Power Of One. Is Might Always Right?
US HYPER-MUSCLE / A Balance Of Power Of One. Is Might Always Right? - Mag. Michael McNeill.
Let us deal with the first real considered criticism so often levied at opponents of current US foreign policy, especially in regard to pre-emptive military intervention and the most recent war in Iraq (and until recent months apparent ambitions on the part of the US administration to widen its actions in the Middle East to possibly include Iran, Syria and Lebanon).
The war in Iraq, the next venue to get the label of the central front on the war on terrorism has been the same story of US quasi-empiring. The story is familiar with the US having again given support (for former apparent Cold War reasons) to the parties that they now destroy. Saddam Hussein was formerly the man of the movement when he suited US interests and was supported comprehensively and given access to highly complex and destructive munitions, including weapons of mass destruction (WMD). So the story continues with a full-scale US assault on Iraq and the toppling of a tyrannical regime. The end, you may say. Not so. The fight against your chosen "terrorist" may have some salience, but is not the end of the matter. What is at issue is the regime moguls of America ensuring US profitability and its wealth-making future.
