Memetics
From SourceryForge
Memetics is a discipline which espouses the concept of the meme , that is, a discrete unit of thought which propagates mind to mind in the same manner in which viruses jump from host organism to host organism. Although the general concept of a viral mental replicator had been proposed prior, Richard Dawkins coined the phrase in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene": We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. `Mimeme' comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like `gene'. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme. If it is any consolation, it could alternatively be thought of as being related to `memory', or to the French word mªme. It should be pronounced to rhyme with `cream'. Retrieved from " http://sourceryforge.org/w/Memetics Views Personal tools Navigation Search Toolbox

Greetings Consumer, The Industrial Memetics Institute is an unfathomably vast hierarchical bureaucracy made up of extremely boring people who spend their days in row after row of gray cubicles; sitting at gray desks, typing at gray computer terminals, and thinking gray thoughts. The employees of the Industrial Memetics Institute run the world. A few key presses on one of our computer terminals can mean the difference between life and death for thousands of people in the third world. Our employees do not understand this relationship, and they do not enjoy their jobs. We hope that you do not find our website too exciting, and we hope that you are not aimlessly browsing the web when you have work to do. Sincerely,
The Industrial Memetics Board of Directors

Memes and genes
In his book The Selfish Gene (1976), the ethologist Richard Dawkins invented the term meme to describe a unit of human cultural evolution analogous to the gene, arguing that replication also happens in culture, albeit in a different sense. In his book, Dawkins contended that the meme is a unit of information residing in the brain and is the mutating replicator in human cultural evolution. It is a pattern that can influence its surroundings and can propagate. edit
Physical nature of the meme
Biologists such as E. O. Wilson have noted that when a cultural element such as a belief passes from one person to another, there must be specific neural networks present in those persons which hold the content of the meme. In genetics, DNA molecules carrying genes are passed from generation to generation. In memetics , neuronal networks that are shaped by learning and memory storage carry the memes that are passed from person to person.

Symposium on Memetics
EVOLUTIONARY MODELS OF INFORMATION TRANSMISSION
as part of the 15th International Congress on Cybernetics NAMUR (Belgium), August 24-28, 1998
About the Symposium
The Journal of Memetics - Evolutionary Models of Infromation Transmission , in collaboration with the Principia Cybernetica Project , has decided to organize a first symposium on memetics . The aim of the journal is to integrate the different approaches inspired by memetics, and thus try to establish memetics as a recognized scientific field. The symposium similarly wishes to bring together all researchers working on memetics, in order to allow them to meet face to face, thus stimulating discussions and possible collaborations. The symposium is chaired by two members of the Journal's editorial board, Francis Heylighen and Mario Vaneechoutte. The emphasis will be on discussion, rather than on formal presentation.
Symposium Theme
In 1976, Dawkins invented the word 'meme,' in analogy with the word 'gene', defining it as 'a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation'. Thus, he defined the field of memetics, which studies the development and spread of culture and information, on the basis of the Darwinian principles of variation, reproduction and natural selection. Further information on memetics is available through the journal's web server: The initial description of 'meme' by Dawkins is rather vague, which is a possible reason for current diverging views on what a meme really is, and how the memetic model can be used. We are confronted with an avalanche of books, essays, and publications scattered over different journals and disciplines, with dialogue flashing up here and there in an unstructured manner. This chaos exists because a general framework is lacking.

It looks like this page is either lost or has been confiscated by the FBI – maybe even the CIA! I've been half expecting that to happen with all the Dubya and police-state stuff I've got in this site subtly lurking among the 'cover' of folklore, unusual history, free resources, humor and blah-blah-blah. Why, O why would I not listen to my friends If you're sure you typed in the URL correctly, the following information might help:
  • You can click here to go to the Wilson's Almanac homepage where you can use the easy search engine to search 3,000+ pages. If they haven't confiscated the search engine.
  • If you prefer, you can just sit this one out. And/or check just one more time the URL, just in case it was user error and not our growing police state or my bad housekeeping. Check that you didn't type .htm instead of .html.
  • You might prefer to find some other website that has not yet felt the sting of oppression and ultra-patriotism, where citizens can still act freely. There must be one

Search this site: Memetics (3 Entries) The Web is a social network, and ideas (memes) move through the people as much as they move through the digital artifacts they leave behind. This is the real basics of fan building on the Web no matter what buzzword du jour you might apply to it (viral marketing, buzz marketing, community development, narrative marketing, etc.) Faux Docs as Natural Virals Well, another film is being heralded as the next "Blair Witch" of viral web marketing. It's no surprise that it's another faux documentary (or "docu-fiction" as these filmmakers prefer to term it.) "September Tapes" is creating all the confusion that a good mixture of reality and fiction should (even though the film has been widely covered from its screenings this year at Sundance and Cannes.) Mike and I have been having some lively email discussions about the campaign, but I think the important issues relate more to the faux doc format (and why that drives filmmakers to build natural virals.)
