Memetics: An Evolutionary Theory of Cultural Transmission
1. Introduction In his 1976 book The Selfish Gene meme . Like genes, memes would be replicators, and the mechanism by which they produced copies of themselves would be imitation:
Examples of memes are tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or arches. Just as genes propagate themselves in the gene pool by leaping from body to body via sperms or eggs, so memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via a process which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation [1].
Ever since, the study of memes memetics
The question is thus whether the notion of meme is to have a merely heuristic value, or whether on the contrary it may make possible the development of a scientific programme, be it in its original Dawkinsian form or in some modified version. 2. The Meme-as-Germ and the Meme-as-Gene Literature on memetics tends to divide into two main branches, according to the analogy on which it is based. The most popular interpretation of memetics, sometimes known as the interpretation, sees memes as similar to disease agents as reflected in the titles of well-known popularisations and / or vulgarisations of memetics:

Memetics
From EvoWiki
Memetics is a field of biology , psychology, and sociology which deals with the replication, spread and evolution of memes. A meme is a communicable idea. The term meme was coined by Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene (1976). Memetics applies some of the principles of biological evolution to human thought and culture. Memes are ideas that can:
  • Replicate, either by human imitation or by mechanical reproduction (e.g., printing books) Change, or mutate , sometimes by flawed imitation or reproduction, or by influence from other memes or ideas
As examples of memes, Dawkins suggested “tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or of building arches.” Memes can also be members of meme complexes, or memeplexes , in which many memes function together. Religions are common examples of memeplexes, because they are collections of evolving ideas. However, memetics is a controversial field. Some scientists argue that biological evolution does not map to memetics perfectly. Stephen Jay Gould held the opinion that memetics is misleading, and not useful.

    • Memes avant la lettre [A personal hobby. CRS] The word ``meme'' was coined by Richard Dawkins in his (much-maligned) 1976 book The Selfish Gene: ``I think that a new kind of replicator has recently emerged on this very planet. It is staring us in the face. It is still in its infancy, still drfiting clumsily about in its primeval soup, but already it is achieving evolutionary change at a rate which leaves the old gene panting far behind. ``The new soup is the soup of human culture. We need a name for the new replicator, a noun which conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmisision, or a unit of imitation. `Mimeme' comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like `gene.' I hope my classcist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme. If it is any consolation, it could alternatively be thought of as being related to `memory,' or to the French word It should be pronounced to rhyme with `cream.'

What's worse, Esso is doing its best to stop other countries' attempts to prevent the world from heating up. Here are five reasons why we should boycott Esso products: 1. Esso pretends that global warming isn't happening even though it's a major cause of it. Esso spends millions of dollars on misleading propaganda every year. 2. Esso has played a leading role in sabotaging international attempts to stop global warming. It would rather sell more petrol than protect future generations. 3. Esso refuses to invest in clean, green energy and instead spends all its money on dirty oil and gas. Even Shell and BP will invest $500 million each over the next three years in green energy projects. 5. Esso is among the most important groups that paid for George Bush's election campaign. As soon as George Bush became president, he said that the United States would pull out of international agreements to stop global warming - exactly the policy that Esso was promoting. Darwinizing Culture Andrew Whiten, Times Higher Education Supplement for May 18, 2001 "It is hard to criticize a book that criticizes itself so fully; indeed, despite my disagreements with individual authors, Aunger's strength is to bring together a diversity of views so that most points are fully addressed . . .[The book ] is to be applauded for the refreshing, conservative approach to a field that lends itself to speculation and exaggeration. " Simon Reader, Trends in Cognitive Sciences 5:8:365-366
Prominent academics such as Dan Dennett and Gary Cziko have recently argued that we are entering the age of Universal Darwinism. Testimony to this arrival comes from the burgeoning of fields such as evolutionary ecology, evolutionary psychology, evolutionary linguistics and literary theory, evolutionary epistemology, evolutionary computational science, evolutionary medicine and psychiatry even evolutionary (so-called combinatorial) chemistry and evolutionary cosmology. Such developments certainly suggest that Darwin's star is rising ever higher as the next millennium approaches. What unifies these approaches, despite being concerned with such varied topics? Dan Dennett has argued that Darwin's "dangerous idea" is an abstract algorithm, often called the "replicator dynamic." This dynamic consists of repeated iterations of selection from among randomly mutating replicators according to some criterion. Replicators, in turn, are units of information with the ability to reproduce themselves using resources from some material substrate. Couched in these terms, such a process is obviously quite general. For example, this dynamic, when played out on biological material such as DNA, is called natural selection. But Dennett suggests there are essentially no limits to the phenomena which can be treated in such a fashion, although there will be variation in the degree to which such treatment leads to productive insights.

Memetics is the formal study of memes. Memetics can currently be regarded as either a field of sociology, or a protoscience in its own right. It originated when Richard Dawkins reduced the process of biological genetic evolution to the most fundamental unit, the replicator (or gene). In a search for other things that might be classifiable as replicators on earth, Dawkins suggested information and ideas in brains, or culture (perhaps software is another replicator that evolution may eventually build grand things with). Memetics applies concepts taken from the theory of evolution (especially population genetics) to human culture. It tries to explain many very controversial subjects, like religions and political systems, using mathematical models. login or register read more Filed under: Memetics memetics feedback

During a public recording of France Culture "des papous dans la tªte" show on 6th of June 2004, Fran§oise Treussard rhetorically asked herself if the author of the classical question-story about the chicken who would have crossed the road was present in the studio. I took the issue in my own hands as if I could find the actual author. Alas! Would I know that I was embarking on a long journey through time (actually only a few days of work, but years of Internet history). History of the term
In his book The Selfish Gene (1976), the ethologist Richard Dawkins invented the term meme to describe a unit of human cultural evolution analogous to the gene , arguing that replication also happens in culture , albeit in a different sense. In his book, Dawkins contended that the meme is a unit of information residing in the brain and is the mutating replicator in human cultural evolution. It is a pattern that can influence its surroundings and can propagate. This created great debate among sociologists, biologists, and scientists of other disciplines, because Dawkins himself did not provide a sufficient explanation of how the replication of units of information in the brain controls human behavior and ultimately culture. Accordingly, the term "unit of information" came to be defined in different ways by many scientists. Susan Blackmore (2002) re-stated the meme definition as whatever is copied from one person to another person, whether habits, skills, songs, stories, or any other kind of information. Further she said that memes, like genes, are replicators. That is, they are information that is copied with variation and selection. Because only some of the variants survive, memes (and hence human cultures) evolve. Memes are copied by

How much more so those ideas deliberately seeded in order to engineer social trends and both mass and individual opinion? Were it not for the memetic engineering of the superbrights and hyperturings over the mass of society, the galaxy would schism into warring factions, chaos, intolerance, bigotry, and superstition. Applied Memetics is what holds interstellar civilization together over vast distances. It is also (along with the Distributed Information Net ) one of the most important inventions of the information age Memes are socially inherited ideas that determine what people think and believe; memetics is the social and cultural sphere what genetics is to the biological. Sophont beings adopt a conception of God or deity, or social biases and prejudices, or particular fashions, because their peers and the media do or their parents and society did, and so on back through the generations. Prior to the first singularity memes were selected via Darwinian processes of "natural selection"; some religions, fashions, ideologies, fads, cultures, and languages proved stronger than others and hence flourished. The rise of superbrights and hyperturings saw the domestication of the meme, and the memetic engineering replacing cheap propaganda or advertising or political or military power as the ultimate instrument of persuasion and subversion. Thus the superbrights and transapients - either on their own or working through the medium of or as an instrument for religions, noetics, polities, and megacorporations - manipulate the consciousness of sentient beings under them, and are in turn manipulated by higher transingularity AIs above them, in a noospheric ecology of great complexity.
