Where did knowledge management come from?
by L. Prusak In this essay I look at the history of knowledge management and offer insights into what knowledge management means today and where it may be headed in the future. This is an updated version of an article first published in Knowledge Directions , the journal of the Institute for Knowledge Management, fall 1999. Now that knowledge management is widely known and practiced in many large organizations, it might be useful to look back a bit and try to give some perspective on how this old but new subject developed and, in particular, what some of the specific antecedents of today's knowledge management movement are. IBM These knowledge-related conversations and initiatives were new, but nothing comes from nothing. They had both intellectual and practical sources. Looking at some of those sources might give us a reasonably good picture of where the practice of knowledge management came from, what its important elements were then, and still are today. There is, of course, continual two-way traffic between the worlds of theory and practice. I distinguish here between intellectual and practical antecedents for rhetorical convenience, but they are not as distinct as this treatment suggests. Reality is far more blended, messier, and more interesting.

Anecdotes
Origami
I have before me paper models of a unicorn, a stegasaurus, and a giraffe. Each was folded from a single square sheet of paper without any cutting or pasting. What is the value of these figures? The paper involved is a few pennies. I consumed .10 pizzas while folding them. Yet they are much more valuable than that. Why? I added knowledge. I obtained the knowledge from books written by John Montroll in Maryland, who created the knowledge. He has the incredible ability to see an animal, understand its proportions, and recognize how to convert a square piece of paper into a figure that represents that animal. After he created the knowledge, he transmitted it via books. I then acquired the knowledge and used it to produce the models. Stuff we know

Unfortunately, there's no universal definition of KM, just as there's no agreement as to what constitutes knowledge in the first place. For this reason, it's best to think of KM in the broadest context. Succinctly put, KM is the process through which organizations generate value from their intellectual and knowledge-based assets. Most often, generating value from such assets involves sharing them among employees, departments and even with other companies in an effort to devise best practices. It's important to note that the definition says nothing about technology; while KM is often facilitated by IT, technology by itself is not KM.
Think of a golf caddie as a simplified example of a knowledge worker. Good caddies do more than carry clubs and track down wayward balls. When asked, a good caddie will give advice to golfers, such as, "The wind makes the ninth hole play 15 yards longer." Accurate advice may lead to a bigger tip at the end of the day. On the flip side, the golfer — having derived a benefit from the caddie's advice — may be more likely to play that course again. If a good caddie is willing to share what he knows with other caddies, then they all may eventually earn bigger tips. How would KM work to make this happen? The caddie master may decide to reward caddies for sharing their tips by offering them credits for pro shop merchandise. Once the best advice is collected, the course manager would publish the information in notebooks (or make it available on PDAs), and distribute them to all the caddies. The end result of a well-designed KM program is that everyone wins. In this case, caddies get bigger tips and deals on merchandise, golfers play better because they benefit from the collective experience of caddies, and the course owners win because better scores lead to more repeat business.

Knowledge Management
Just because knowledge is intangible does not mean that its impact is.
Knowledge Management can help your organization:
  • Cut through large quantities of data to capture quality information Improve client service by institutionalizing best practices Reduce operating costs by streamlining processes

Through our KM Advisory Services, we show organizations how to give employees the opportunity to learn from best practice research and also from one another. APQC is here to help you improve your processes at every stage of KM from the initial development to the ongoing assessment.
Best-practice organizations have a deliberate and robust KM strategy to solve business problems. APQC's Road Map to Knowledge Management : Stages of Implementation helps you to identify key business drivers and create processes to ensure employees have access to the resources they need.
If you are just beginning your KM journey, APQC can help you develop a KM strategy that works for your organization. If you have an existing KM program, we can provide an audit of your program and help you launch advanced KM techniques.
Communities of Practice are designated networks of people that share information and knowledge face-to-face and virtually. Best-practice organizations use CoPs to close knowledge gaps, transfer successful practices, and perfect state-of-the-art processes.

Nonprofit Knowledge Management
by Michael C. Gilbert , Feb. 2002 On March 7th, 2002, I appeared on a panel at the Grantmakers for Effective Organizations Conference. As part of that presentation, I was asked to prepare this short introduction to the principles, lessons, questions, and resources of value to people considering nonprofit knowledge management initiatives.
I. Principles
Question: Based on your experience, what do you believe are the principles, or core truths, about successful knowledge sharing communities? If you were to offer advice to someone who was responsible for strengthening information sharing and knowledge building among people in their organization or network, what kind of wisdom would you offer to help ensure that their effort succeeds? (1) Know Thyself as an Organization Ignorance of an organization's or community's current needs and processes is the number one contributor to poorly conceived knowledge management initiatives. It's essential to map the existing assets and communication flow, because that is where the opportunities for improvement lie and where the barriers to new initiatives will be found. This kind of knowledge is particularly important in the case of technology centric knowledge initiatives.

Knowledge Management in Instructional Design. ERIC Digest.
Instructional designers engage in activities related to the planning and implementation of instructional and performance support solutions. Available tools and technologies influence the way in which instructional designers accomplish their tasks. Knowledge management represents a technology that is changing how instructional design professionals work. This article will review what instructional designers do, describe knowledge management, and indicate how knowledge management is influencing instructional design.
INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
This process is often poorly-structured and iterative, involving people from different backgrounds and areas of expertise. In an instructional design project, different kinds of resources and artifacts are created: proposals, memos, analyses, solution strategies, lesson plans, evaluation plans, media support for lessons, performance data, and so on. According to the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (Richey et al., 2000), ID is an engineering discipline with principles, rules, and heuristics, many of which are sensitive to local conditions (individual learners, specific settings and resources, learning cultures, and so on).

Hydroinformatics Dimitri Solomatine's pages NEURAL NETWORKS Artificial neural networks (ANN) is probably the most successful technology develeloped in the framework of Artificial Intelligence (AI). ANN are widely applied in pattern recognition, control and modelling. Research in ANN is aimed at applying various types of ANN to solving practical problems in water resources modelling and management. In the recent publications several applications of ANN were demonstrated. Neural network tool NNN (for MS-DOS and for Windows) has been built. A version that can be run across Internet ( WebNNN ) is also available. More on NNN and WebNNN tools Some publications: Solomatine, D P, and Avila Torres, L A, (1996). Increasing numbers of law firms in the US have begun to actively apply competitive intelligence (CI) to track competitors, even without gaining full support from the senior partners at the firm, according to a recent survey of 119 firms.
The 40-page whitepaper (free download, registration required) was authored jointly by Leonard Fuld of , and co-sponsored by LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell , and the US Legal Marketing Association (LMA).
Emerging themes:
(1) Almost all law firms engage in some sorts of competitive intelligence activities.
(2) Many do not have a clear understanding of CI.
(3) Most firms engage in CI activities, but few call it CI. (4) Generally, firms use CI to support the decision-making process. (5) Many think that CI is only about monitoring news sources. (6) People in business development, marketing, and the firm library typically have CI as part of their jobs. (7) Marketing department people are receptive to CI.
