ISSN 1705-9232 Editorial Welcome to a unique experiment in journal publishing - the open library concept. In this approach you the reader have open access to all articles that have been, and are currently being, published in JKMP. I think of this open library concept as a "knowledge garden". For me the notion of a knowledge garden has always conjured up the image of a real garden on a warm summer's day. A garden replete with shady walkways, and benches where I can rest and enjoy the wonderful variety of fragrances, colours and textures. The kind of place which entices me to wander around and relax and reflect no matter how busy I happen to be. I hope you will view the JKMP in this same light. As a place with purpose and boundaries, but populated by design according to chaos theory; a place to wander round, relax and reflect, and be pleasantly surprised from time to time. Note that articles originating prior to August 1999 were published in the Journal of Systemic Knowledge Management; for reasons of ediitorial freedom that journal has been reborn as the Journal of Knowledge Management Practice. Mathematical Knowledge Management is an exciting new field in the intersection of mathematics and computer science. We need efficient, new techniques - based on sophisticated formal mathematics and software technology - for taking fruit of the enormous knowledge available in current mathematical sources and for organizing mathematical knowledge in a new way. The Workshop and the Special Issue should bring together math researchers, software developers, publishing companies, math organizations, and teachers for exchanging their views and approaches and for pushing the field. Whereas the workshop is designed to provide a forum for discussion and presentation of early ideas, the special issue is a forum for polished, refereed papers in the area of mathematical knowledge management.
Participation and presentation of talks and papers is possible in both the workshop and the special issue, jointly or independently.
