  • The Electric Telegraph (1860-1914) - The electric telegraph revolutionized long-distance communication, replacing earlier semaphore communication lines. In addition to its primary use for point-to-point messages, other applications were developed, including printing telegraphs ("tickers") used for distributing stock quotes and news reports.
  • News and Entertainment by Telephone (1876-1925) - While the telegraph was mainly limited to transmitting Morse Code and printed messages, the invention of the telephone made distant audio communication possible. Although used mostly for private conversations, there was also significant experimentation with providing home entertainment. In 1893 a particularly sophisticated system, the

    weblogs: a history and perspective
7 september 2000 In 1998 there were just a handful of sites of the type that are now identified as weblogs (so named by Jorn Barger in December 1997). Jesse James Garrett, editor of Infosift , began compiling a list of "other sites like his" as he found them in his travels around the web. In November of that year, he sent that list to Cameron Barrett. Cameron published the list on Camworld , and others maintaining similar sites began sending their URLs to him for inclusion on the list. Jesse's ' page of only weblogs ' lists the 23 known to be in existence at the beginning of 1999. Suddenly a community sprang up. It was easy to read all of the weblogs on Cameron's list, and most interested people did. Peter Merholz announced in early 1999 that he was going to pronounce it 'wee-blog' and inevitably this was shortened to 'blog' with the weblog editor referred to as a 'blogger.' At this point, the bandwagon jumping began. More and more people began publishing their own weblogs. I began mine in April of 1999. Suddenly it became difficult to read every weblog every day, or even to keep track of all the new ones that were appearing. Cameron's list grew so large that he began including only weblogs he actually followed himself. Other webloggers did the same. In early 1999 Brigitte Eaton compiled a list of every weblog she knew about and created the Eatonweb Portal . Brig evaluated all submissions by a simple criterion: that the site consist of dated entries. Webloggers debated what was and what was not a weblog, but since the Eatonweb Portal was the most complete listing of weblogs available, Brig's inclusive definition prevailed.

    189. Math History
Covers early beginning development of mathematics in different societies around the world Arabic, China, India, and Mayan empire.
    http://mathhistory.info/
Introduction Arabic mathematics Chinese mathematics Inca mathematics ... Contacts Every culture on earth has developed some mathematics. In some cases, this mathematics has spread from one culture to another. Now there is one predominant international mathematics, and this mathematics has quite a history. It has roots in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, then grew rapidly in ancient Greece. Mathematics written in ancient Greek was translated into Arabic. About the same time some mathematics of India was translated into Arabic. Later some of this mathematics was translated into Latin and became the mathematics of Western Europe. Over a period of several hundred years, it became the mathematics of the world. There are other places in the world that developed significant mathematics, such as China, southern India, and Japan, and they are interesting to study, but the mathematics of the other regions have not had much influence on current international mathematics. There is, of course, much mathematics being done these and other regions, but it is not the traditional math of the regions, but international mathematics.

Err, they just patched the game and gave the sludges a really low xp rating. Now I have to quest...which takes forever on a PvP server, but in the end you get to have so much more fun :).
Now about this site. I just registered www.themessage.jp , which is going to be my personal site until the end of time, I just didn't want to pay so much money a year for it until I was ready. Otsuge hopefully will be moving to a new destination as soon as this guy forgets to renew his domain in November. This site will probably end up redirecting to themessage.jp, but I'm not sure. I've used this e-mail for two years so I don't want to lose it. www.suspiciousbulge.com will be my testing site for new website ideas. I'm trying to get a professional url for business e-mails and such, but this fool from yahoo stole my name. He only signed up for a year so hopefully he won't renew the domain this fall. Otsuge was a personal project to help me understand PHP/MySQL more thoroughly, and I'll finish it eventually. I can't put my new webserver up until I get another hard drive for it, so none of these sites will be up for a few weeks.

    Oral History Association
Oral history is a method of gathering and preserving historical information through recorded interviews with participants in past events and ways of life. It is both the oldest type of historical inquiry, predating the written word, and one of the most modern, initiated with tape recorders in the 1940s. The Oral History Association, established in 1966, seeks to bring together all persons interested in oral history as a way of collecting human memories. With an international membership, the OHA serves a broad and diverse audience. Local historians, librarians and archivists, students, journalists, teachers, and academic scholars from many fields have found that the OHA provides both professional guidance and collegial environment for sharing information. In addition to fostering communication among its members, the OHA encourages standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, dissemination and uses of oral testimony. To guide and advise those concerned with oral documentation, the OHA has established a set of goals, guidelines, and evaluation standards for oral history interviews.
