Overview
Family and Consumer Sciences education is designed to empower people to strike a balance between home and career. The name for this discipline was recently changed from "home economics" to better reflect the dimension of preparing students for high-demand occupations. Family and Consumer Sciences programs enable students to acquire broad, transferable skills for employment and personal use as well as job-specific skills in occupations related to children, the elderly, food production and management, hospitality, education, resource management, and social and human services. All students face the challenge of living and working in a high-tech society. As life becomes more complex, it is increasingly important to assist people to meet the basic human needs of daily living, to think critically, to take responsibility for their own lives and to respect the rights of others in the family, the workplace and the community. The discipline was born almost 100 years ago when Ellen H. Richards, the first woman to graduate from M.I.T., gathered a group of professionals in chemistry, botany, psychology, and sociology, and urged the application of science to meet daily household challenges. Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality focuses on individuals, families, communities, and the environments in which they function. As families continue to evolve away from the "traditional" lifestyle, it is crucial to maintain the well-being of individuals, families, and our society. That is why it is important to understand how we function and interact as wage earners, families, and consumers. The program of study in Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a major in Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality. Employment opportunities related to business include retail management and selling, retail buying, hotel/restaurant management, consultation for retail business, and hospitality.
