Ethnoarchaeology and Ethnology Series The Agta Foragers:
Ethnoarchaeology and Ethnography
The Agta of the Phillippines live by hunting, gathering, fishing and exchange with lowland farmers. Based on studies of a group whose traditional lifeways are partly maintained, this set looks at the interactions of subsistence and settlement systems seasonally as well as how archaeological components of a living system are formed. By P. Bion Griffin.

The Ngatatjara Aborigines of Western Australia
The emphasis in this set is on a broad range of the domestic activities of a traditional hunter-gatherer society living in an extremely ecologically stressed environment. The material culture of the domestic activities of these people is carefully documented in this set, thus addressing some relevant archaeological issues. By Richard A. Gould.

Material Culture of the Ngatatjara
This set complements the previous set in showing how continuity and change in the technology and material culture of Western Australian aborigines has been increasingly influenced by contact with the developed world. The ingenuity of traditional multi-purpose tools such as the spearthrower is illustrated in both their purely practical daily use and in their symbolic, communicative function. By Richard A. Gould.

While the primary emphasis is on First Nations and Metis peoples of the Northern Plains and Subarctic, the collections feature materials from other regions of North America, particularly the western Arctic and Great Lakes, as well as Africa, Australia, and Japan. Objects in the collections date from the mid-1800s to the present. The Ethnology collections are an invaluable resource for a wide variety of people interested in Alberta's history and cultural diversity. Individuals researching family and community history regularly consult the collections, as do university students conducting research projects in the fields of anthropology, history, Native studies, and clothing and textiles. The public school system incorporates Ethnology program materials into its curriculum, and Ethnology staff responds to numerous inquiries about First Nations and Metis cultures from members of the public and cultural heritage professionals. Staff members work in partnership with First Nations and Metis communities on cultural heritage projects, and the Ethnology program manages a summer internship program in Museology for Aboriginal university students. Ethnology program staff played a major role in developing the Syncrude Gallery of Aboriginal Culture Horse mask.

HANOI MUSEUM OF ETHNOLOGY The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is a convergence of cultures and a scientific ethnological center. It has actively contributed to the conservation and development of the national culture, as well as the cultural traditions and identities of the Vietnamese nationalities. The museum is located on Nguyen Van Thuyen Street (named after a famous national ethnologist), in Cau Giay District, about 7-8 km from downtown Hanoi. It covers an area of nearly 3.3 hectares. Ha Duc Linh, an architect of the Tay ethnic group, designed the museum in the form of the ancient drum of the Dong Son Culture, and interior decorations were designed by French architect, Veronique Dollfus. Being part of the National Centre for Social Sciences and Humanities, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is involved in various undertakings. It carries out scientific research on Vietnamese nationalities, collects, classifies, assesses, preserves, restores, exhibits, introduces and exploits the cultural and historical values of all the nationalities. It also provides ethnological references and trains staff in the specific fields of the ethnographic museum. The Museum also attaches attention to the cultures of other countries in Southeast Asia, seeing them as potential targets for exhibitions at the museum in the near future. Since its foundation, the Museum has preserved rich and diverse showpieces and documentary references. At present, more than 15,000 objects, about 40,000 photographs and many audio-visual tapes, of which many collections are of highly cultural value, are exhibited and preserved by the Museum.

Institute for Balkan Studies Although the year 1999 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Institute for Balkan Studies, its origin dates back to 1934, when Ratko Parežanin and Svetozar Spanaæeviæ founded in Belgrade the Balkan Institute, at the time the only of the kind in the Balkans. The Balkan Institute was stifled in 1941, when the German occupational authorities closed it down and confiscated its entire property, including its huge archives and library. More than quarter a century has elapsed until the idea has been restored to life that Balkan studies constitute an indispensable segment of our science. Under auspices of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Institute for Balkan Studies was founded in 1969. The idea was realized by academician Vaso Èubriloviæ, who gathered a group of scholars pursuing the study of the Balkans, and established its broad orientation in terms of chronology and interests.
