Museums in Dahlem
With a total of 500,000 objects from throughout the world and large numbers of sound recordings, documentary photographs and films, the Museum of Ethnology ranks among the largest and best of its kind. The museum collects, preserves and researches cultural products of pre-industrial societies, primarily outside of Europe.
The collection
The museum currently embraces the following collections: Africa, American archaeology, American ethnology, Europe, the Islamic Orient, eastern and northern Asia, south and south-east Asia, the South Seas and Australia, as well as the ethnology of music. Other facilities include the Children's Museum and the Museum for the Blind.
At present only a few of the different collections have permanent exhibition areas. Now that the Picture Gallery and the Sculpture Collection have been moved, space has been gained for additional presentations. In autumn 1999 two major exhibitions will be opening here on North American Indians and African Art.
The exhibition "American Archaeology" presents the great diversity of pre-Hispanic cultures in Meso-, Central and South America from 2,000 BC to the first half of the 16th century. Exhibits include unique stelae from Guatemala with carved reliefs, painted stoneware vessels of the Maya, Aztec stone figures of gods and a selection of gold objects from Central America, Colombia and Peru.

About the Exhibition A representative selection from the large holdings of the African collection in Berlin, one of the world's most significant, awaits the visitor, an exhibition of exquisite works that span more than five hundred years' time. For the first time since the end of World War II works are shown, which - long presumed lost in war - had actually been transported by Russian troops to Leningrad in 1945, later stored in Leipzig, and then returned to Berlin. The exhibition encompasses an area of c. 1000 sq m, in which more than 200 pieces, the majority dating from the end of the 19th century until the second World War. Included in the display are approximately 30 of the returned objects as well as 40 recent acquisitions. Museum of Ethnology

Suita-City, OSAKA Design/Construction:1973-1977 Reinforced Concrete 4 Floors The National Museum of Ethnology is located on the site of the "World Exposition 1970" in Suita, Osaka. The highly flexible grids incoporatedfor the entire building design and the display system connote thelattice-like structure of world cultures and, at the same time, ensurefuture expansions of exhibition spaces. The building itself is a complexof diverse, interpenetrating boundaries. The external walls are extruded from the posts, and the lines of the flatroof and the floor are vividly expressed by means of aluminium tubularborders. This emphasizes architectural horizontality in contrast tothe gentle rolling green hills of the site. The colors are organizedon the basis of Rikyu gray, a traditional color in Japan, so that thebuilding integrates with and accentuates the materials displayed in it. The entire building is divided into blocks with square plans, each beingan exhibition space surrounding a central courtyard. This centralcourtyard is an ambivalent space where the exterior and interiorintermingle and is used as a stage set on which various elements canpeacefully coexist in mutual exposure. The central patio is called"Future Ruin", which serves not only as an outdoor exhibition space, butalso for the visitors to grasp the whole construction of this architecture. The museum accommodates, besides the exhibition, Videotheque booths, information administration and processing facilities, storage, researchrooms, administration offices and restaurant.
