The taboos of sex and sexuality continue to inhibit honest and open communication and dialogue while the rates of HIV/AIDS, unanticipated pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, continue to cripple communities of color around the world. It is critical that women and youth take an active role in their own health and the health of their families and communities by becoming informed and involved. Please support IWES in its efforts to improve the health of communities of color through awareness and activism.

About Our Department The Ethnic Studies Department was founded in 1970 at the University of Hawai'i Manoa with a mandate to provide a research, institutional and community service unit which integrated the concerns of race, ethnicity and class. The program was established to develop a new curriculum and faculty expertise in a discipline that was then in its infancy. Permanent status was granted in 1977 and Ethnic Studies became a full-fledged department in 1995. Ethnic Studies has developed a unique academic presence at Manoa. It is the only unit whose concentration is wholly upon race and ethnic relations, both in Hawai'i and the U.S., as well as comparative studies of groups around the world. The Ethnic Studies Department is also unique in that it maintains a research and teaching philosophy emphasizing praxis: the application of intellectual theories to the complex programs in our local communities.

AMERICAN ETHNIC STUDIES
W ake Forest University offers an Interdisciplinary Minor in American Ethnic Studies. The primary purpose of the Interdisciplinary Minor is to increase students understanding of ethnicity and race in the United States. The Interdisciplinary Minor in American Ethnic Studies is open to all degree-seeking undergraduate students and is designed to be taken concurrently with the student's major. The Program is especially appealing because courses may be counted toward other general and specific graduation requirements in the student's major. Being multi-disciplinary, the American Ethnic Studies Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to understand the viewpoints and research methodologies of various social and behavioral science disciplines regarding ethnicity and/or race. The Program offers scholarly study of distinctive social, political, cultural and historical experiences of ethnic and racial groups in American society. Ethnic Studies Resources

Social Stratification in the American South ... Updates/Announcements /Contact The Program draws upon faculty and courses in the disciplines of history, sociology, education, literature, theater, philosophy, communication, languages, geography, religion, psychology, communications and anthropology. In particular, the program emphasizes the experiences, both past and present, of four groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans. In addition, Non-Hispanic White ethnic groups are also examined as they relate to the founding of the American Republic, community development and contemporary society.

Ethnic Studies as a Suggested Course of Study
The National Association for Ethnic Studies defines the discipline a s "an interdisciplinary voice for the continuing focused study of race and ethnicity." Ethnic Studies is concerned with how all ethnic groups interact, but focuses primarily on those groups that have been largely ignored as having contributed to the creation and shaping of this country.
Ethnic Studies faculty at Lane Community College represent specialists from different disciplinary backgrounds, working together to produce a joint, coordinated, and integrated learning environment. We strive to provide for the interdisciplinary study of historical and contemporary realities of the four major historically subordinated ethnic and racial groups in the United States: the Indigenous First Peoples of North America and the Pacific, people of African and Asian ancestry, and Chicanas/os and Latinas/os. In addition, our faculty encourage students to critically analyze the intersections of race and ethnicity with other variables such as: ability, class, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, nationalism, and globalization.
This is a suggested course of study for students interested in Ethnic Studies.  All Ethnic Studies offerings at Lane fulfill the Social Sciences Category of the AAOT, as well as the Ethnic/Gender/Cultural Diversity graduation requirement. A suggested course of study is not the same as a state-approved vocational program in which a student earns a degree or certificate issued by the LCC Board of Education, nor is it an Associate of Arts degree.  All Ethnic Studies courses, with the exception of co-operative education, are offered at 4 credits each. For further information, contact Michael Sámano, Coordinator, Ethnic Studies.
