Disabilty And Literature
Posted by Lydia Fecteau , 7/5/03 at 12:31:42 PM. This is the online companion to our Disability and Literature course. I will post lectures and link pertaining to that week's course content. You will also be able to access your syllabus. I will also post and link to further readings and research. This course is a brief study into the reaction of this disabled community and culture reflected through literature. We will begin with a historical approach. Then we will look at disabled authors and finally we will touch upon disability criticism. This course will try to cover as much material as possible, but will not completely explore all aspects of this topic. We will divide cultural history as follows: Ancient people, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Romantic Age, Victorian Age, Modern Age, and Postmodern Age. We will limit our exploration of ancient people to Greek/Roman, Egyptian, Hebrew/Early Christian, and Norse. The rest of our cultures will be Western, Christian society. Disabled people will also be limited in our discussion. I will be breaking the disabled community into three parts: physical, visual/auditory, and mental. Physically disabled will refer to anyone with a physical difference from society’s established norms. This may mean amputees, giants, deformed, dwarfs, and diseased. Visual and auditory will be blind and deaf. Mentally disabled will include mentally ill, developmentally disabled, and cognitively disabled (epileptics). This restriction on the disabled community leaves out many worthy individuals, notably the learning disabled. However, we must restrict this “minority” in order to through examine the details of culture’s responds to people it exposes as “different.” I will use “disabled” to describe those with differences, not because it is the best term, but because it is the most convenient.
