Readers of the Village Voice were treated to an articulate review of the field of Disability Studies in the article by Rebecca Tuhus-Dubrow The wheel world: Is disability studies academia's next frontier?" Disability Studies scholar and avid traveler Simi Linton explains in the piece,
"The curriculum had traditionally housed disability in a very sequestered area—how to fix people and take care of them. Disability studies is us looking out at the world and seeing how that looks to us." It also critiques "how disability is represented in all kinds of texts—in literature, film, the annals of history."
It is no surprise that the disability studies field also monitors carefully for inclusive travel developments in the travel and hospitality industry. The field of Disability Studies provides the intellectual motivation and rigor behind the growing literature in tourism and people with disabilities. Disability Studies Quarterly (DSQ) is the journal of the Society for Disability Studies (SDS). It is a multidisciplinary and international journal of interest to social scientists, scholars in the humanities, disability rights advocates, creative writers, and others concerned with the issues of people with disabilities. It represents the full range of methods, epistemologies, perspectives, and content that compose multidisciplinary disability studies. DSQ is committed to developing theoretical and practical knowledge about disability and to promoting the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society. DSQ is in transition toward having both a peer-reviewed section and a non-peer-reviewed section, in general and symposium editions. All peer-reviewed articles must meet the highest and most rigorous standards within their larger academic discipline and will be anonymously reviewed by at least two scholars in the field. Non-peer-reviewed materials can be commentary, essay, research-in-progress, poetry, or fiction on some topic relevant to the field of disability studies. All non-peer-reviewed materials will be reviewed for quality and appropriateness and are not guaranteed publication. Disability Studies Quarterly Founding Editor: Irving Kenneth Zola (1935-1994) Editors:
Corinne Kirchner, American Foundation for the Blind.

Conference to inaugurate disability studies initiative By Kate Tomkie
University Record Intern
A drive to integrate the study of disability into other fields of academia such as research and teaching will be boosted this week by a conference inaugurating the U-M Initiative in Disability Studies (UMInDS). The conference will feature a panel discussion on current disability issues and will touch on topics such as eugenics, Medicare and disability pertaining to minorities. Panelists include Martin Pernick, U-M professor of history; Catherine Kudlick, University of California professor of history; and Ro Anne Chaney of the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition. The conference, 1-6 p.m. April 8 in the Vandenberg Room of the Michigan League, is free and open to the public. Keynote speaker Rosemarie Garlan-Thomson, Emory University associate professor of women's studies, will address disability and the female form at 4 p.m. "UMInDS exists to give a perspective on disability studies to the academic community," says Tobin Siebers, chair of the UMInDS Steering Committee and co-instructor of UMInDS' course in disability studies. "It changes the way we think about a subject in medical school, about legal issues, about the way we look at poetry." UMInDS combines several opportunities for researchers and students of disability studies. The graduate course, which is designed to introduce disability advocacy and awareness to students, is scheduled to run through winter 2006.
