European Association for Population Studies
Welcome
Demographic developments in Europe as well as the causes and consequences of population trends are a challenging field for scientific study and debate. Scientists from a variety of disciplines are actively engaged in the study of European population trends and future prospects. Since a number of the issues addressed are common throughout the world, not only Europeans take a keen interest in population issues in Europe. Also European population experts are working in or on (mainly non-European) developing countries. In order to promote these studies and to foster the co-operation between those involved, the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) was founded in 1983. EAPS is a scientific association of individual members and Affiliated Institutions EAPS is an international and multidisciplinary forum for population studies with a special focus on Europe's population. It aims to stimulate the interest in population issues among governments, national and international organizations and the general public. EAPS organizes conferences, seminars, workshops and working groups in close collaboration with its Affiliated Institutions and other organizations. EAPS also disseminates population-related information.

The NASSELENIE Review
The review has a long-standing history. It appeared as topical series "NASSELENIE" (Population) published by the Coordination Council on Demography at the BAS over the period 1983-1989. Its direct successor was the NASSELENIE review published by the Institute of demography at the BAS over the period 1990-2002. The review has been published by the Center for population studies at the BAS since 2003. The topical range of the NASSELENIE review is formed in a way so that the performance of the complex approach in the demographic development representation is assured. Papers concerning the overall evolution and reproduction of the total population and its main subgroups, the separate demographic processes and the basic population structures, the changes in the demographic behaviour of individuals and population subgroups, are published in the review. Results of the study of various other aspects of population changes connected to the impacts of economic, social, medical, psychological, ethnographical, historical and of other factors on the demographic evolution are included in the review. This is why the NASSELENIE review is open to authors from a number of scientific fields whose researches are related to the studies of problems of demographic nature. Theoretical studies, scientific analyses of demographic and sociological researches, historical analysis, national and international information, reviews, interviews, etc., find place in the review. The following main headings are encompassed in it:

FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES - DEMOGRAPHY
Demography may be defined briefly as the study of human populations in relation to the changes in their sizes, structures and spatial distributions as a result of the interplay of the three demographic processes; Fertility (births), Mortality (deaths) and Migration (population movements). Demography as a scientific study of human populations uses a variety of analytical techniques to turn raw data collected in population censuses, vital registration systems and surveys into more precise measures. This branch of Demography is usually referred to as Formal or Technical Demography. In addition to dealing with the measures of Fertility, Mortality, Nuptiality (marriages) and Migration and their Interrelationships, Demography also deals with the size and composition of human populations at a given point in time and the relationships between these elements and the social, economic and cultural environment within which they exist. This branch of Demography is referred to as substantive Demography or Population studies. The "Formal Demography" enables us to understand the causes and/or determinants of population growth. This knowledge is very crucial for the avoidance of the undesirable consequences of population growth. The "Substantive Demography" or "Population Studies", on the other hand, provides us with the tools to examine the interactions of demographic, social, economic, political and cultural processes on which the entire human survival depends. Thus, Demography in its broadest sense is concerned with these processes that are necessary for effecting structural and institutional changes in societies that will most effectively bring about improvements in living standards of the masses of the people. Hence, its multi-disciplinary nature.

Although populations are more abstract conceptual entities than cells or organisms and are therefore somewhat more elusive, they are nonetheless real. A gene pool has continuity in both space and time, and organisms belonging to a given population either have a common immediate ancestry or are potentially able to interbreed. Alternatively, a population may be defined as a cluster of individuals with a high probability of mating with each other compared to their probability of mating with a member of some other population. As such, Mendelian populations are groups of organisms with a substantial amount of genetic exchange. Such populations are also called demes, and the study of their vital statistics is termed demography.
In practice, it is often extremely difficult to draw boundaries between populations, except in very unusual circumstances. Certainly European starlings introduced into Australia are no longer exchanging genes with those introduced into North America, and so each represents a functionally distinct population. Although they might well be potentially able to interbreed, the probability that they will do so is remote because of geographical separation. Such differences also exist at a much finer and more local level, both between and within habitats. For example, starlings in eastern Australia are separated from those in the west by a desert that is uninhabitable to these birds, so they form different populations.

In addition, for each of these units a population estimate was compiled for 1960, 70, 80 and 90 which provides an indication of past population dynamics in Africa.
