Cognitive Science at the University of Exeter In 1991, the single honours degree in Cognitive Science was formed at the University of Exeter, hosted by the Department of Computer Science and the School of Psychology. Exeter thus became one of the first British Universities to offer a degree in this exciting, and relatively new field. Teaching quality: The Department of Computer Science is one of only 13 UK computer science departments achieving an excellent rating in the last round of national Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA), and the School of Psychology recently received 23 out of 24 points, also excellent , from the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) as part of its TQA. The quality of the Cognitive Science programme, jointly taught by Computer Science and Psychology, is therefore excellent by national standards. IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Cognitive Science programme will be closed after the October 2004 entry have graduated. There will be no admissions to the programme for October 2005 or subsequent years.

    • Benzon, William L. and David G. Hays. Metaphor, Recognition, and Neural Process. American Journal of Semiotics
Bill Benzon has placed online a copy of a dated but interesting article on metaphor and neural processes from 1987. This article is an excellent illustration of the then current debate between the interaction view and the cognitivist (Lakoff and Johnson) view of metaphor. The discussion of neural processing revolves around Pribram's suggestion that the mind stores representations holographically, and is also somewhat out of date.

Checkerboard Illusion A light check in the shadow is the same gray as a dark check outside the shadow. Motion, Form, and Mid-Level Vision Tutorial The motion of the two bars to the left remains the same, but the addition of the occluding frame causes the bars to appear to move in a circle. The Mid-Level Vision Tutorial contains similar illusions that shed light on the interactions between motion and form. Lightness Perception and Lightness Illusions This interactive tutorial demonstrates how lightness illusions provide insights into the underlying mechanisms of the human visual system.
