The Freeman Undergraduate East Asian Scholarship Application is now available: 2005-06 Scholarship Brochure . This includes the Explore East Asia (EEA) China and Japan application, as well as the Research Study Abroad (RSA) and Area Studies Abroad (ASA) application.
In 1975 the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences established the East Asian Studies Center (EASC) in order to provide dedicated leadership, coordination and support for the growing interdisciplinary education, research activity, and community outreach concerning East Asia. For more than a quarter century, EASC has been recognized as one of the nation's leading centers for the development of East Asian area studies. Indeed, USC is among a small group of elite colleges and universities to be designated a National Resource Center for East Asian studies by the U.S. Department of Education.
This website describes the scope and diversity of our programs and initiatives by providing information about faculty resources, degree programs, courses of instruction, research activity and library collections, as well as the wide range of East Asia-related activities organized by the Center and other organizations across the university. The interdisciplinary nature of our program is one key to its enduring and growing success. But in the final analysis, it is USC's commitment to East Asian studies as a critical area of emphasis that insures the program's ongoing vitality and future expansion.

The Centre for Documentaiton and Area-Transcultural Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (hereafter, TUFS) founded in 2002, has been granted the Centre of Excellence (hereafter, COE) status by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Government of Japan. Its COE programme aims to constructively reorganize TUFS - which boasts the biggest collection of historical materials in Asian and African languages within Japan - into a key historical materials hub and centre. The Centre will act as a base for promoting information-sending and information-sharing projects, which will form the backbone of a new cross-disciplinary research in Area and Culture Studies, able to meet the challenges of a highly information-oriented twenty-first century. We at TUFS believe that the discipline of Area and Culture Studies needs an urgent revitalization if it is to effectively meet the needs of the new century. Introduced into Japan in the 1960s, the discipline followed a unique path of development in its encounter with the sociology of rural communities based as the latter was on meticulous fact-finding surveys and ecology. The successes of Area and Culture Studies institutions in our country have certainly been laudable. Even so, the current rapid advancement in globalization has caused great transformations in symbolic area divisions such as countries and regions and has brought about tremendous changes in the self-identity of people. In such a twenty-first-century world, Area Studies now finds itself confronted with methodological reconsiderations which strike at the root issue: conceptualizing the target of investigation.

#14) New Bill Threatens Intellectual Freedom in Area Studies YALE DAILY NEWS, November 6, 2003
Author: Benita Singh CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, March 11, 2004
Author: Kimberly Chase Faculty Evaluator: Robert Manning
Student Researchers: David Sonnenberg, Josh Sisco The bill portrays academic institutions as hotbeds for anti-American sentiment, specifically area studies programs. It proposes an advisory board that would be responsible for evaluating the curricula taught at Title VI institutions, course materials assigned in class, and even the faculty who are hired in institutions that accept Title VI funding. The advisory board would report to the Secretary of Education and make funding recommendations based on their findings. Conservative academic Stanley Kurtz testified in support of HR 3077 and the advisory board. Kurtz stated that "the ruling intellectual paradigm in academic area studies is "post-colonial theory.” His problem with this idea is that “The core premise of post-colonial theory is that it is immoral for a scholar to put his knowledge of foreign languages and culture at the service of American power.” According to Singh, Kurtz argues that “the root of anti-Americanism, is not our repeated missteps abroad, unilateral occupation, or the continuing deaths of innocent civilians, but rather, post-colonial scholarship.” He feels that post-colonial theory is the cause for bias against America, driving his conclusion that Title VI programs are putting national security at risk as they indoctrinate their students with a hatred of America.

Their faculty are leading scholars and teachers in the humanities, social sciences and the professions and are often called upon to advise U.S. and foreign government officials. The outstanding quality of IU's centers has been due to the strong emphasis on foreign language study.
