College of Arts and Sciences / Kansas State University
Welcome! We hope that our website makes it easy for you to identify opportunities at K-State to enhance the international dimension of your studies, research, and general interests. In my capacity as Director, my primary responsibility is to administer two Secondary Major programs: International Studies and Latin American Studies . I enjoy working with students who seek to complement their major disciplinary studies with courses and activities that invite them to "think globally" and to prepare for future careers for which knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of other nationalities, languages, and cultures will serve them well. Please check out the secondary majors as you browse through the features of our website. As a former participant in my undergraduate school's study program in Peru, and as a professor of Spanish, you can count on me to be very enthusiastic about opportunities for Study Abroad, for involvement as a volunteer in the International Community Service Program , and for expanding one's view of the world by learning a second (third?; fourth?) language. FOCUS
The ASLG seeks to increase recognition within the discipline of the contributions to theory by comparativists and international relations scholars working primarily in one or more world regions. The group performs several key functions within the Association to this end:
  • Serving as a bridge between APSA and the various area studies associations to support greater participation by political scientists belonging to those associations in the work of the APSA.
  • Helping to identify comparativists and international relations specialists working who could be candidates to serve on APSA governance bodies.
  • Identifying candidates for special Annual Meeting lectures such as the Ithiel de Sola Pool lecture.

Welcome to the Centre for Developing-Area Studies
The Centre for Developing-Area Studies (CDAS), founded in 1963, is an interdisciplinary research centre and part of the Faculty of Arts, McGill University. The CDAS conducts research on international development in all regions of the so-called developing world - Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East - at the student, faculty and postdoctoral levels. The CDAS is a research centre, not a teaching unit. Unfortunately, we cannot admit students directly.

Mandate The mandate of JCAS is to promote integrated Area Studies throughout the world, in part by building international networks among Area Studies researchers and research institutions. JCAS has accumulated a basic knowledge of areas through fieldwork carried out by its research staff. JCAS has also organized joint projects with Japanese and international scholars in various disciplines, invited Area Studies scholars to Japan from abroad, and hosted international symposia and workshops on various key topics in Area Studies.
JCAS activities operate in three major categories:
Basic studies Basic studies are conducted both individually by JCAS staff researchers and jointly with researchers from other Japanese institutions. Among JCAS joint projects are inter-institutional projects that serve to develop lasting collaborative relationships among various Area Studies institutions in Japan. Joint or inter-institutional projects, which run for three years, consist of regular meetings and exchanges with scholars from abroad, and result in final research reports. Both JCAS staff and visiting professors play important roles in the organization and management of these projects. The JCAS vision also includes International Joint-Research Projects that will be further explored following the pilot collaboration between JCAS and the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos (IEP).
Basic studies cover a broad range of issues from around the world. JCAS seeks to promote studies on areas and fields about which the accumulation of knowledge and information has so far been limited in Japan. The comparison of issues from various areas is also conducted.

V illanova offers six interdisciplinary area-studies programs: Africana Studies, Arab and Islamic Studies, East Asian Studies, Irish Studies, Latin American Studies, and Russian Area Studies. Although the programs are formally part of the College of Arts and Sciences, area studies are open to students in all undergraduate colleges. Most area studies programs offer both concentrations and minors; all include a language requirement where appropriate. Although not required, students in area studies programs are strongly encouraged to consider studying for a summer, a semester, even a year, in one of the countries that make up the area they are studying. Villanova's area studies programs enrich the academic community with a broad range of lectures and cultural events.
