Anthropology at USC Anthropology is the study of humankind in a cross-cultural, social science perspective. At USC, Anthropology consists of Cultural Anthropology, and its subfields, with a small program in Biological Anthropology. The central notions of anthropology, the importance of culture in shaping human behavior and the relativity of culture, have become generally accepted premises within Western society. However, the analysis and understanding of cultural differences-whether in human communities or among other primates, remains the central and unique goal of anthropology. Employment Opportunities

- Lesley Hunt It took more than a dozen plane flights, a train, a boat and a multitude of buses to take us from Toronto to Shanghai, up the Yangtze River, to Xian, Beijing and finally to the top of the world in Lhasa. In less than three weeks we did the equivalent of a “Grand Tour”, viewing flora and fauna as well as many archaeological artifacts. The archaeological sites we visited are vast, as is the country, and while there are some exceptions the Chinese are making a huge effort to preserve their heritage. We were witness to a country struggling to hold onto its history while trying to meet the challenges of current world trade. This presentation will show some of the highlights of the trip.

Anthropology on the World Wide Web
Use the search form above to find links and references for anthropology, archaeology, history, linguistics, psychology, sociology and other social sciences. The Anthro.Net database contains thousands of reviewed web sites and bibliographic references. On the World Wide Web there are an estimated 250,000 sites that have content relating to the subject matter of anthropology. Unfortunately an estimated four-fifths contain little useful information. There are tens of thousands of anthropology sites containing redundant links to other pages that are collections of redundant links. Anthro.Net queries a database of over 40,000 pages from reviewed web sites with anthropological content built by users' interests. The system collects the search terms submitted by its users and uses proprietary software to hunt down internet based journal articles, well developed topical sites and bibliographic references for anthropology, archaeology and the other social sciences. Anthro.Net uses a spider or robot program to check for outdated and dead links. The site contains dynamically generated news and anthropology features updated around the clock.

    Welcome to the Anthropology Department
    at the University of Denver
Anthropology is the study of the origin, history, and nature of people and cultures. It explains the relationships between biology, culture, and the environments in which people live. Anthropology addresses modern problems such as the integration of cultural and ethnic diversity, the conduct of international relations, human rights, and the management of environmental and cultural resources.
The faculty of the Department of Anthropology are experts in analyzing human differences in the context of the material (political and economic) conditions of life. We are concerned with the interaction of gender, race, ethnicity, class, and other variables in human affairs, and with the consequences of these relationships for social change and development. Drawing on the resources of our Museum of
Anthropology, we are concerned with how the material world expresses and sustains human relationships and ways of thinking.

    What is Gnosis?
Gnosis is knowledge; knowledge that is got by our own direct personal experience; particularly knowledge of the spirit, the "Being" It is not about believing nor disbelieving, but practice and experience. For example we may receive Gnostic knowledge in an enlightened type of dream, or whilst meditating. It may be a deep realisation that comes to us whilst we are seriously reflecting on a particular topic or on our life, or it may be just a knowing, an intuition.
The Being and the Esoteric Path
Gnosis is knowledge: experiential knowledge; More than an occasional experience, Gnosis is a path: the path to self-realisation. The experiences of a greater Truth guide us to a particular goal. It is the "Middle Path" of the Buddha, the Tao, or "Way" of Chinese Taoism. It is the "Straight and Narrow" path of Christianity, the climb back up the "Tree of Life" of the Hebrew Kabala: the way back to that from which we originally came.

The Department of Sociology/Anthropology has the unique feature of combining two disciplines within a single departmental major. We encourage students to take full advantage of this opportunity to develop a perspective for the systematic analysis and understanding of human behavior. Based on the empirical findings of the closely related disciplines of sociology and anthropology, this perspective is inherently comparative, in that the department is concerned with the impact of culture and society in various settings.
Although these disciplines share common concern about human behavior, each has its own history, concepts, and theoretical commitments. Anthropology essentially focuses on the role of culture in human experience, and sociology is concerned primarily with the role of social interaction and the social structure in human experience.
