10. What Is Archaeology?
An illustrated introduction from the Department of anthropology at the University of South Dakota.
http://www.usd.edu/anth/midarch/arch.htm
What is archaeology?
The Bliss Bone Bed Site Archaeology is the scientific study of peoples of the past... their culture and their relationship with their environment. The purpose of archaeology is to understand how humans in the past interacted with their environment, and to preserve this history for present and future learning.
What archaeology isn't.
Sometimes people get confused about what archaeology studies.
Why study archaeology?
Archaeological sites are a non-renewable resource; that is, once they are destroyed, the information they contained is lost forever. By learning about life long ago through archaeology, we can learn many ecology and history lessons that are still applicable today. Follow these links to find out more about archaeology: What do archaeologists do? How are sites found? What do archaeologists do at a site? What can we learn from artifacts? ... CSAC Anthropology Bibliography
Search for bibliographic references in the CSAC Anthropology Bibliography
Any Field Author
Editor Title
Book
Journal Date Formatted Include Abstracts and Notes
Refer format Fill in the form above, then click on the "Submit" button. Combinations will automatically be combined - So "zeitlyn" in Author and "sacrifice" in title will find a work by one of the anthropologists called Zeitlyn with the word sacrifice in the title. Truncation is automatic in the sense that it searches for what you put in - no "*" is necessary. Note that "or" searching will follow soon
Note
Makhzan, the CSAC general social anthropology bibliography, is the result of collaborative data sharing by many people over the years. It was started by John Davis and has been regularly updated by Mike Fischer, David Zeitlyn and Marcus Banks as well as incorporating submissions sent by others, and from other sources. It aims to cover the general field of social anthropology in its broadest sense. We would welcome additional material from users. A word of caution: the data in this database has not been verified according to the highest bibliographic standards. Where there is uncertainty about a date, for example, which becomes evident when two records for 'the same' reference give different years we have left them both in. It is some consolation that COPAC which is produced by professional librarians at some of the most prestigious UK institutions has similar problems! Please send comments and suggestions to
