Lionel Salem
Lionel Salem was born in 1937. He obtained his doctoral degree at Longuet-Hinggins' in 1960. He taught Theoretical Chemistry at Orsay for some time, went into banking and returned again to a professorship at Orsay, this time as head of the Department for the Popularization of Knowledge. For this interview he explicitely excluded the Hueckel theme.
Interview with Professor Lionel Salem
Paris, October 28, 1997, 17:00
Dr. Anders: Professor Salem, besides being a quantum chemist by training you have written and co-authored a great number of successful books in all kinds of fields . In quantum chemistry you wrote at least two well-known books: In 1982 you issued Electrons in Chemical Reactions: First Principles (9) . Earlier on, in 1966, you had published The Molecular Orbital Theory of Conjugated Systems (10) about which one still hears how well written it was. It was and still is certainly well received by the students, even nowadays it is, for instance at the University of Constance, much in use - it's always out on loan. This probably being due to the fact that quantum chemistry is quite often presented in a fairly abstract, dry manner, and which is, to the ordinary chemist at least, not always appreciable in its practical orientation. So students still pick up your book for that very reason: in order to find out what they are really doing and why.

Commencement Speaker Looks Back
UC Berkeley Mathematics, 1936-1996 CONSTANCE REID, Mathematical Biographer When Professor Wagoner called and invited me to speak at Commencement today, my reaction was no no no, I can't do it, I've talked too many times already this year. But then a few hours later I called back and said, if he didn't already have somebody else, yes I would talk there was something I would like to tell the graduates. Commencement is traditionally a time for looking forward, but this afternoon I am going to look back because it seems to me that, as you leave the Berkeley Mathematics Department, you may like to take with you some sense of its past. The Mathematics Department's home and your home away from home for the last few years was not always Evans Hall, and "Mr. Evans" was not always that white-haired, black-gowned old fellow with a pipe whose portrait hangs in the Mathematics Library. In fact, I recently obtained a photograph of him as a very young man, good-looking with dark curly hair, wearing a sharp Italian pinstriped suit he studied in Italy, you know, with Volterra and Levi-Civita. So this afternoon I am going to take you back some sixty years to the time when Mr. Evans came to the University of California. But first I want to give you a sense of the time and the place that I am talking about. It is not the same. Sixty years ago, in 1936, when Mr. Evans actually came to Berkeley (although he had been selected earlier), the year 1996 was as far away to him as the year 2056 is to you sitting here in this auditorium on the Berkeley campus of the University of California this afternoon. And in 1936 although this land was owned by the University this auditorium was not here and the land on which it stands was not part of the campus. The entrance to the campus was at Sather Gate.

Annual Lecture Series
Each year, the Department sponsors four lecture series: the Adrian Albert Lectures in algebra, the in analysis, the Charles Amick Memorial Lectures in applied mathematics, and the Unni Namboodiri Lectures in geometry and topology.
Adrian Albert Lectures in Algebra
The Albert Lectures are the oldest of the four lecture series. They are named after Abraham Adrian Albert (1905-1972), who received his Ph.D from Chicago in 1928, under the supervision of L.E. Dickson. Albert later returned to Chicago as a member of the faculty, and served for a time as chair of the department and President of the AMS. The 2004-2005 speaker will be:

Charles J. Amick Memorial Lectures in Applied Mathematics
Charles Amick was an applied mathematician at the University of Chicago who died in 1991, at the age of 39. The Lecture Series was begun in 1993 as a means of honoring his painfully brief life. Past Amick Lecturers include: Andrew Majda, Joseph Keller, John Ball, Martin Kruskal, Paul Roberts, David Ruelle, John Guckenheimer, Percy Deift, Keith Moffatt, Ingrid Daubechies, Yann Brenier and Felix Otto.

Antoni Zygmund
Born: 25 Dec 1900 in Warsaw, Russian Empire (now Poland)
Died: 30 May 1992 in Chicago, Illinois, USA
Zygmund worked in analysis, in particular in harmonic analysis . He created one of the strongest analysis schools of the 20 Century. Zygmund obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Warsaw in 1923 for a dissertation written under Aleksander Rajchman's supervision. From 1922 to 1929 he taught at the Polytechnic School of Warsaw. After a year in England he took up a post at the university of Vilnius, Lithuania. He held this post until he was drafted into the Polish army at the start of the Second World War. In 1940 Zygmund escaped with his wife and son from German controlled Poland to the USA. After a number of posts he was appointed to the University of Chicago in 1947 and remained there until he retired in 1980. Zygmund was to create at Chicago a major analysis research centre. In 1986 he received the National Medal for Science for his building this research school. He supervised over 80 research students in his years at Chicago. Zygmund's book Trigonometric Series (1935) is a classic that, together with later editions, is still the definitive work on the subject. Other major works include
