Mary Catherine Bishop Weiss
December 11, 1930 - October 8, 1966 Daughter of a university mathematics teacher. Attended the Laboratory School of the University of Chicago, then continued on to the university itself for both her undergraduate degree and her Ph.D. (1957). Her Ph.D. theses, under the direction of Antoni Zygmund, dealt with trigonometric series. Held faculty positions at DePaul University, Washington University, the University of Chicago, and Stanford University. Published 20 papers during the course of her brief but productive career.

    Prerequisites
You should have some rigorous knowledge of analysis, such as Math 265 or 265H.
    Course Description
Math 265 develops the rigorous tools for working with analysis. In this course, we will apply these ideas to Fourier analysis, one of the most appealing parts of concrete analysis. In Fourier analysis, we try to break up an arbitrary function in terms of "basic modes", just as musical tones are combinations of basic frequencies, and light is a combination of different colors. This idea has applications throughout pure and applied mathematics, as well as in the sciences and engineering.
    Textbook
Fourier Analysis by E. M. Stein and R. Shakarchi The syllabus is flexible, and depends on the interests of the students. The textbook is meant to be part of a "Feynman lectures in mathematics", by one of the best living mathematicians.

    Scientists and Engineers Biographical File
About the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File What is the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File? The File contains information on scientists who were prominent in the early 1970s. It consists of folders containing photographs, biographical information and bibliographies of 1200 American and 100 foreign scientists and engineers. How was the collection formed? The collection was formed during the years 1972 - 75, when The Science and Technology Division solicited the materials as gifts from members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineers. Other scientists included those listed in Who's Who in Science, Engineers of Distinction, winners of the National Medal for Science, and Scientists in Search of Their Consciences. The division asked Nobel Prize recipients in the sciences to submit portraits and a print of their award ceremony. Who should use the The Scientists and Engineers Biographical File? The archive is useful to researchers needing pictorial material for publications, and anyone who needs bibliographical (that is, materials created by or about the scientist) and biographical information on many well known and lesser known scientists and engineers of the mid-twentieth century.

Born: 13 Nov 1890 in Warsaw, Russian Empire (now Poland)
Died: Jul or Aug 1940 in Sachsenhausen
Aleksander Rajchman was born in Warsaw on 13 November 1890. He studied in Paris obtaining "licenci© ©s sciences" in 1910. In 1919 he obtained a position at the University of Warsaw, first as a junior assistant, and, after obtaining his PhD in 1921, as a senior assistant. In 1922 Rajchman became a professor at the Free University in Warsaw (Wolna Wszechnica) and in 1925 he made a habilitation at the University of Warsaw and lectured at this University as a Privat Docent until 1939. In the late thirties he lectured in College de France at the seminar of J. Hadamard. Aleksander Rajchman started to work in trigonometric series under the influence of Hugo Steinhaus, he worked also in real functions, probability and mathematical statistics. The list of his publications counts 40 positions. Rajchman had a strong influence on S. Saks and A. Zygmund by introducing them into research in the theory of real functions and of trigonometric series. Jointly with Antoni Zygmund he wrote three papers on trigonometric series. Aleksander Rajchman was arrested by Gestapo in April 1940 and perished in the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen, probably in July or August 1940.
