The characterization theorem which we are going to derive will serve to show that the functions which fall under the first definition but not under the second are, from a certain point of view, to be considered as freaks, counter examples rather than examples.

50. Issue 14: Foreward By Kim Zorn Caputo

http://www.blindspot.com/issue14/forward14.html
Max squeezes his head and his front legs through the safety gate lodged between the opened window and the fan to breathe the silvery night air all stirred up by a very playful moon. The moon slips into a roof garden, staggers between the lawn furniture and the potted trees. Chase me! Max lunges for it and gets trapped between two metal bars. "Aw God. I wish she were here." She'd scold him, pull him back inside, laugh and hug him so good. The moon is wearing a band of gray cloud slightly above its middle where text could read WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW COULD HURT YOU. Max's back hurts and his stomach is feeling weird. The moon must have fallen asleep on a lounge chair. Max has a vague sense that there might be another world besides this one. It's not the same since she met the new guy. "She used to count on me." He was the barometer of her marriage, registered every mistake-a glance from her, in the middle of a battle, and she knew she had his support. When they finally ended their unreasonable life together, Max was there. She raised him like her son, taught him how to think, and now he's supposed to think for himself. "I think I am dying." He sends a message to his body. "You're dying." He hangs his head and tears roll up his head into his hair, watering his hair that continues to grow like a dead person's does.

Tribune - COLUMNIST I have been writing a metropolitan news column for the Chicago Tribune since September 1986, when the editors decided to institutionalize the off-beat suburban feature stories I had been writing for the local news section most of that year. The column, called "Hometowns," alternated with Barbara Brotman's "About the Town" feature the whole concept was borrowed from "About New York" and "Our Towns," the alternating columns in The New York Times.
I'd been sent to the suburban news staff the previous year, against my wishes at the time, "to get more experience."
I needed it. Whether the timing of my transfer to the suburban outpost was merely coincidental with certain office political woes as I was assured or not, and despite my frantic protestations at the time, the move turned out to be the best thing for me.
My range was narrow. I'd been in the features and arts areas of journalism since my first article was published in the Oct. 2, 1977 issue of The Michigan Daily, the student newspaper at the University of Michigan where I was then a sophomore majoring in English Lit and Creative Writing.
My first published sentence in the Daily was 51 words long and began, "While many contemporary books of short stories often seem to be cut whole out of a single piece of fabric. ..."

BIO C. Janusz Suprynowicz is composer-in-residence with the Berkeley Opera through their 2006 season. Mr. Suprynowicz spent many years in the trenches as a jazz musician before decamping to compose full-time. His work as a bassist includes performances and recordings with John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Art Lande, Max Roach, and Tom Waits. Moving to the San Francisco Bay Area from the East Coast in 1982, Suprynowicz founded the Bay Area Jazz Composers Orchestra with composer Paul Nash and wrote numerous scores for that ensemble. The Bay Area Jazz Composers Orchestra met with critical acclaim and performed widely, including an appearance in the 1987 San Francisco Jazz Festival. Suprynowicz has written theme music and incidental music for National Public Radio. He has composed songs and chamber music, as well as jazz works. A quintet for percussion, winds and strings, commissioned by the American Composers Forum, premiered in 2003, one of a series of works commissioned by ACF. But his output as a composer for the last decade has focused on work for the stage. Suprynowicz is a founding member of the New Music Theatre Project, a forum for new work in the singing theatre at Z Space Studios in San Francisco. His opera Ariadne , with librettist Ken Prestininzi, was developed at Z Space, and was premiered in 1998 by City Summer Opera at the Diego Rivera Theater, City College, San Francisco. Research students to give tomorrow's mathematics colloquium
When: Thursday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m.
Where: VWF 104
Tea time: 3:30 p.m. in VWF 222
Two research students, Andrew Craker from Notre Dame and Erin Wicker from Alma College, will give tomorrow's colloquium titled, "Spiraling to our Doom." These students worked with Prof. Aaron Cinzori last summer on this REU project.
This colloquium is an extension of the one given a couple of week's ago by Prof. Tom Scofield from Calvin College. In that talk we were introduce to an algorithm that, given n points in the plane and a parameter t between and 1, produced a spiral. He showed where the spiral goes, when it has finite length, and gave an approximation for that length.
In this talk, Erin and Andrew will discuss the special case of three initial points. They will demonstrate a method that produces the exact length of the spiral (as a geometric series) for infinitely many t t
This talk uses ideas from Calculus 2 (infinite series) and Multivariable 1 (matrices).
