Zeno Of Elea
(c. 495 BC-c. 430 BC), see also Eleaticism Greek philosopher and mathematician, whom Aristotle called the inventor of dialectic . He is especially known for his paradoxes that contributed to the development of logical and mathematical rigour and that were insoluble until the development of precise concepts of continuity and infinity.
Zeno was famous for the paradoxes whereby, in order to recommend the Parmenidean doctrine of the existence of "the one" (i.e., indivisible reality), he sought to controvert the common-sense belief in the existence of "the many" (i.e., distinguishable qualities and things capable of motion). Zeno was the son of a certain Teleutagoras and the pupil and friend of Parmenides . In Plato's Parmenides, Socrates , "then very young," converses with Parmenides and Zeno, "a man of about forty"; but it may be doubted whether such a meeting was chronologically possible. Plato's account of Zeno's purpose (Parmenides), however, is presumably accurate. In reply to those who thought that Parmenides' theory of the existence of "the one" involved inconsistencies, Zeno tried to show that the assumption of the existence of a plurality of things in time and space carried with it more serious inconsistencies. In early youth he collected his arguments in a book, which, according to Plato, was put into circulation without his knowledge.
Zeno made use of three premises:

Life
Little is known for certain about Zeno's life. Although written nearly a century after Zeno's death, the primary source of biographical information of Zeno is the dialogue of Plato called the Parmenides http://classics.mit.edu/Plato/parmenides.html . In the dialogue, Plato describes a visit to Athens by Zeno and Parmenides, at a time when Parmenides is "about 65", Zeno is "nearly 40" and Socrates is "a very young man" ( Parmenides 127). Assuming an age for Socrates of around 20, and taking the date of Socrates birth as 470 BC , gives an approximate date of birth for Zeno of 490 BC.

Space. If there is such a thing as space, it will be in something, for all being is in something, and that which is in something is in some space. So this space will be in a space, and so on ad infinitum. Accordingly, there is no such thing as space. Motion The Arrow in Flight If, Zeno says, everything is at rest when it is in a space equal to itself, and the moving body is always in the present moment in a space equal to itself, then the moving arrow is still. Therefore the arrow in flight is stationary. The Race Course Motion does not exist because the moving body must go half the distance before it goes the whole distance. Achilles and the Tortoise The slow runner will never be overtaken by the swiftest, for it is necessary that the pursuer should first reach the point from which the pursued started, so that necessarily the slower is always somewhat in advance. This argument is the same as the preceding, the only difference being that the distance is not divided each time into halves. The Stadium With reference to equal bodies moving in opposite directions past equal bodies in the stadium with equal speed, some form the end of the stadium, others from the middle, Zeno thinks half the time equal to twice the time.

ZENO OF ELEA
Zeno of Elea (490 BCE? 430 BCE?) was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher of southern Italy and a native of Elea (Velia) in Italy. Zeno was an attendant of the Eleatic School founded by Parmenides. He is send to have unfolded his doctrines to people like Pericles and Callias for the price of 100 minae and is said to have taken part in the legislation of Parmenides, to the maintenance of which the citizens of Elea had pledged themselves every year by oath. Little is known for certain about Zeno's life. Although written nearly a century after Zeno's death, the primary source of biographical information of Zeno is the dialogue of Plato called the Parmenides.
Other perhaps less reliable details of Zeno's life are given in "Diogenes Laertius' Lives of Eminent Philosophers", where it is reported that he was the son of Teleutagoras, but the adopted son of Parmenides, was "skilled to argue both sides of any question, the universal critic", and further that he was arrested and perhaps killed at the hands of a tyrant of Elea. However it now appears his love of freedom is shown by the courage with which he exposed his life in order to deliver his native country from a tyrant. Whether he died in the attempt or survived the fall of the tyrant is a point on which the authorities vary.

ZENO OF ELEA'S PARADOXES
Zeno of Elea is famous for his paradoxes. Zeno's paradoxes are a set of paradoxes devised to support Parmenides' doctrine that "all is one" and that contrary to the evidence of our senses, the belief in plurality and change is mistaken, and in particular that motion is nothing but an illusion. His most well known are the three paradoxes named "Dichotomy", "Achilles and the Tortoise", and "The Arrow".
Zeno's Paradoxes
Dichotomy:
It is impossible to cover any distance, because half the distance must be traversed first, then half the remaining distance, then again half of what remains, and so on. Some portion of the distance to be covered is ALWAYS left to cover. Therefore, motion is impossible.
Achilles and the Tortoise: Achilles, the worlds fastest runner, is racing a tortoise. Since Achilles is so fast, he gracefully gives the tortoise a head start of 200 yards. After the race begins, he starts to overtake the tortoise. Since he must first reach the point where the tortoise started, from which it has already departed. Repeating indefinitely, Achilles gets to each new point in the race, the tortoise having been there, has already left. Therefore, even though Achilles is much faster than the tortoise, he can NEVER even tie.
The arrow: An arrow shot from a bow must be moving at every instant in its flight. But at every instant it must be somewhere in space. However, if it is always in some one place, it can't be in transit at every instant, for to be in transit is to be NOWHERE and thus cannot be moving.

Zeno of Elea was born in Elea, Italy, in 490 B.C. He died there in 430
B.C., in an attempt to oust the city's tyrant. He was a noted pupil of
Parmenides, from whom he learned most of his doctrines and political ideas. He
believed that what exists is one, permanent, and unchanging. Zeno argued
against multiplicity and motion. He did so by showing the contradictions that
result from assuming that they were real. His argument against multiplicity
stated that if the many exists, it must be both infinitely large and infinitely
small, and it must be both limited and unlimited in number. His argument
against motion is characterized by two famous illustrations: the flying arrow, and the runner in the race. It is the illustration with the runner that is associated the first part of the assignment. In this illustration, Zeno argued that a runner can never reach the end of a race course. He stated that the

    Leucippus
The Greek tradition regarded Leucippus as the founder of atomism in physics. Little is known about him, and his views are hard to distinguish from those of his associate Democritus. He is sometimes said to have been a student of Zeno of Elea, and to have devised the atomist philosophy in order to escape from the problems raised by Parmenides and his followers.
    1. Life and Works
Leucippus is variously said to have been born in Elea, Abdera or Miletus (DK 67A1). His dates are unknown, other than that he lived during the fifth century BCE. Diogenes Laertius reports that he was a student of Parmenides' follower Zeno (DK 67A1). Zeno is best known for paradoxes suggesting that motion is impossible because a magnitude can be divided into an infinite number of parts, each of which must be traversed; the fact that atomism is thought to have been formulated in response to these arguments may account for the story that Leucippus was a student of Zeno. The extent of Leucippus' contribution to the developed atomist theory is unknown. Most reports refer to the views of Democritus alone, or to both atomists together; Epicurus seems even to have denied that there was a philosopher Leucippus (DK 67A2). Aristotle certainly ascribes the foundation of the atomist system to Leucippus. Leucippus is sometimes said to have been the author of a work called the

Zeno of Elea (fl. c. 450 B.C.) Zeno was a fan of Parmenides and sought to "logically prove" Parmenides' big, stupid idea that All Is One (i.e., that there is but one single, motionless Being). This may be the beginning of the notorious tendency in the history of Philosophy to try to use formal logic to prove the utterly ridiculous. Inspired by Frege and the Principia Mathematica of Russell and Whitehead, the 20th century probably saw more of this crazy tendency than any time since Zeno himself rejoined the "universal Oneness."
Daft Zeno stepped forward to say: "Before you can go all the way, You must get to the midpoint, ok? But before you can get quite that far You must first pass the quarterly bar, And before that the eighth, har, har, har! No matter how great your devotion Repeating this recursive notion You can never get started with motion." JSH, "Think Before You Step?" (1998) Return to Main Index
