Alphabetical List of Ring Theorists, S-Z
January 2005 "alpha" version This is part 1 of a list of (non-commutative, associative) ring theorists arranged alphabetically by an an anglicized version of the family name (last name) as it appears in the MathSciNet (Math Reviews) author database. This part contains names S-Z. The list includes links to MathSciNet entries, links to individual Web pages, and e-mail addresses all links (when available) work by selecting the name/address. When I am unsure of an address, I include multiple possibilities. Please help me correct any mistakes, or omissions. 14-17 January, 2002 Room 232, Amado Mathematics Building Technion, Haifa, Israel The Institute of Advanced Studies in Mathematics at the Technion (IASM) began its activities in 1989 and has, over the years, attracted a growing number of prominent mathematicians from the international mathematical community, who have visited the Technion to participate in its special semesters, conferences, workshops and lecture series. To celebrate the second decade of its activities, the IASM will hold a special anniversary conference during the period January
14-17, 2002. This conference will comprise lectures in various fields delivered by the following distinguished mathematicians:
Noga Alon, John M. Ball, Haim Brezis, Philippe G. Ciarlet, Eugene B. Dynkin, Hillel Furstenberg, Laszlo Lovasz, Yves F. Meyer, Louis Nirenberg, Peter Sarnak, Efim I. Zelmanov. Organizing committee : Robert Brooks, Daoud Bshouty, Raphael Loewy, Moshe Marcus and Simeon Reich. For further information

Some email addresses are missing, and at least three are incorrect. Rather than wait until the list is more highly polished, we publish it now and solicit improvements and corrections. Please send them to G.C.Smith@bath.ac.uk This list was last corrected 16-viii-1997. Note that the list includes many people who did not attend the conference. These are people who nearly came to the conference, but for whatever reason could not quite make it. It seems silly to leave their names off the list. If you object to your email address being made public in this way, let me know, and I will remove it immediately. Geoff Smith

Barran Fields Medal The Fields Medals are commonly regarded as mathematics' closest analog to the Nobel Prize (which does not exist in mathematics), and are awarded every four years by the International Mathematical Union to one or more outstanding researchers. "Fields Medals" are more properly known by their official name, "International medals for outstanding discoveries in mathematics." The Field Medals were first proposed at the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto, where a resolution was adopted stating that at each subsequent conference, two gold medals should be awarded to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were named in his honor. Consistent with Fields' wish that the awards recognize both existing work and the promise of future achievement, it was agreed to restrict the medals to mathematicians not over forty at the year of the Congress. In 1966 it was agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress. The Fields Medal is the highest scientific award for mathematicians, and is presented every four years at the International Congress of Mathematicians, together with a prize of 15000 Canadian dollars. The first Fields Medal was awarded in 1936 at the World Congress in Oslo. The Fields Medal is made of gold, and shows the head of
