Rowlee, Jr., a Lincoln resident and friend of the Department, who has established a fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation to support research in mathematics. The Howard Rowlee Lecture is an annual event which seeks to bring internationally acclaimed scholars in the mathematical sciences to UNL to promote public understanding of mathematical research and to stimulate the environment for mathematics research at UNL. The inaugural Howard Rowlee Lecture was given in 1997 by Efim Zelmanov, Professor of Mathematics at Yale University and the winner of the Fields Medal in 1994 for his seminal contributions to algebra. What makes a group infinite?
Efim Zelmanov , professor of Mathematics, Yale University, was awarded the Fields Medal (the mathematical analogue of the Nobel Prize) in 1994 for his seminal contributions to group theory. He will inaugurate the Howard Rowlee Lecture series with two lectures.
What makes a group infinite?
Given a group presented by generators and relations, how can we say if it is finite or infinite? In 1964 Golod and Shafarevich suggested asufficient condition for such a group to be infinite. Zelmanov will discuss groups satisfying the Golod-Shafarevich condition.
On growth of algebras
Zelmanov will discuss the notion of growth (Gelfand-Kirillov dimension) of algebras and some important examples of infinite dimensional algebrasof small growth.
The Howard Rowlee Lecture series is made possible through a generous donation by Mr. Howard E. Rowlee, Jr., who has established a fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation to support research in mathematics. The inaugural lectures in this series are also supported by the College of Arts and Sciences Discrete and Experimental Mathematics program and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Scientific Activities
The core of each year's scientific program at the CRM is its thematic program. The topic is chosen by the Advisory Committee for its scientific importance, its timeliness, and its impact on the Canadian scientific community. Preceeding years' topics include: Probability and Stochastic Control (1992-93); Dynamical Systems (1993-94); Geometry and Topology (1994-95); and Applied and Numerical Analysis (1995-96). A year's activities can combine a good number of workshops and conferences, one or two Aisenstadt chairs, a certain number of visiting scientists in residence, and some post-doctoral fellowships. Typically, there is some coordination with Montréal universities to offer appropriate graduate courses in order to help graduate students participate in the activities.
Theme Year 1996-1997: Combinatorics and Group Theory
Overview
The theme of the 1996 -1997 academic year at the CRM was Combinatorics and Group Theory. Combinatorics is a subject whose importance has grown tremendously in recent years, reflecting its enormous importance in many concrete problems either of computer science and operations research. The thematic program covered a wide variety of areas, including graph theory, with a special session on colouring problems, combinatorial designs, algebraic combinatorics, and "experimental mathematics." The activities in combinatorics were combined with a program in related subjects in group theory such as hyperbolic and automatic groups, actions on trees, and combinatorial group theory.

Me: "Ventura?"
Anne: "Yeah."
Me: "What the hell's Ventura?"
Anne: "Yes, that is my question."
Me: "What the hell are you talking about, Meyer?"
Anne: "Uh, okay ... what did you email me?"
Me: "Veracruz!!!" Anne: "And, dude, lidocaine is not on your finger."
Me: "Lidocaine IS on my finger."
Anne: "That's so plannable of us." Me: "Page-turning is not an instrument."
Anne: "You've just never heard it done right." Anne: "Hey, I DID exit. And lidocaine is NOT on your finger." Anne (a couple moments later): "Are we talking about typing in 'finger grossman'? Because I just did." Me: "No, you fool! My FINGER! Not my finger!" Anne: "Hmm ... well how the hell was I supposed to check that?" "So you're a girl, and you're just sittin' there, chillin', and you're like, 'Oh, my God! What happened to my hymen?! Where'd it go! It's gone! What the hell!'
