On being awarded this degree he was appointed to the staff at Novosibirsk State University and taught there while continuing with his own research. He received his Ph.D. from Novosibirsk State University in 1980 having had his research supervised by Shirshov and Bokut. The thesis he presented for his Ph.D. was on nonassociative algebra. In particular his work completely changed the whole of the subject of Jordan algebras by extending results from the classical theory of finite dimensional Jordan algebras to infinite dimensional Jordan algebras. Zelmanov described this work on Jordan algebras in his invited lecture to the International Congress of Mathematicians at Warsaw in 1983. In 1980 Zelmanov was appointed as a Junior Researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the USSR Academy of Sciences at Novosibirsk. On the award of his doctorate (

Walter Feit. In Memoriam Efim Zelmanov Efim Zelmanov holds the Rita L. Atkinson Endowed Chair in Mathematics at the University of California, San Diego. Zelmanov was born in the former Soviet Union and received his doctorate from the Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk in 1980. Zelmanov came to the United States in 1990 and held positions at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Chicago, and Yale University prior to accepting his position at UCSD. He received the Fields Medal in 1994. Other honors include the College de France Medal in 1992 and the Andre Aizenstadt Prize in 1996. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences at the early age of 45. He is an editor or on the editorial board of more than 10 major mathematics journals, including The Annals of Mathematics, The Journal of Algebra and The Journal of the American Mathematical Society. His interests include Jordan Algebras, group theory, and Lie algebras. Remarks by Efim Zelmanov I first met Walter in 1989 when I first came to the United States. The thing that impressed me most was how unassuming and approachable and normal he was and he was the Feit of Feit-Thompson that is a semi-god; so different from the bosses in the former Soviet Union. Walter never preached - it was the priceless, casual, side remarks that he made.

Zelmanov was honored for his work in the field of abstract algebra, including group theory, and specifically for his proof of the Restricted Burnside Problem, where he showed that certain mathematical constructs known as periodic groups are finite. Jonathan Alperin, Professor in Mathematics, called Zelmanov's solution of the Restricted Burnside Problem "a tremendous breakthrough and a real triumph." "His proof is awesome," Alperin said, "and at a level completely ahead of any previous work in algebra. It is notable for its sheer power, but also for the volcano of new techniques he developed to bring it to completion. His single effort has completely changed and advanced the whole field of algebra and given us a whole new field on which to operate." Among the new faculty members are eminent scholars in law, the humanities, the social sciences and the physical sciences. "We are delighted to have such outstanding people as new faculty members," said Provost Geoffrey Stone. "The expertise in research and teaching that these scholars will bring to the University will enhance our already distinguished faculty." Below are brief profiles of the new faculty members who have joined the University as full Professors.
