George Udny Yule
Nel pubblica in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London l'articolo "On the association of attributes in statistics" dove introduce l'indice di associazione per tabelle di contingenza 2x2 detto Q di Yule . Teaching Course in Summer Semester 2005: Introduction to Linguistics (Syntax) Cornelia Gerhardt Mo 14-15h
Geb. 35, R. 120 This one-hour course is an introduction to the descriptive analysis of English sentences. Using the grammatical framework that underlies A Student's Grammar of the English Language (1990) by S. Greenbaum and R. Quirk and the Comprehensive Grammar (1985) by Quirk et al., it concentrates on the form and function of sentences, their various syntactic phrases and other constituents. At the end of the semester participants take a one-hour test, which is part of the Zwischenprüfung. Please check out the Syntax website Courses taught in past semesters: PS Introduction to Linguistics: General PS The language of television viewing This course caters to future linguists, football nuts, and students who would like their listening comprehension to be put to the test. It will lead students through the different stages of a linguistic research project. We will set out by focussing on such linguistic theories as conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, narratology, and ethnography. Next, we will see how spoken language can be transcribed into written form.

George Udny Yule
February 18, 1871, on a small family farm in Morham, Scotland, Sir George Udny Yule and his wife, Henrietta Peach, gave birth to an ambitious little boy who would ultimately take many first steps in paving the way for the development of probability-based statistical methods. This little boy's name name was George Udny Yule. Yule's parents allowed George to have an extensive childhood education. This education began first in a day school, and then he was sent to a preparatory school near Rugby. After prep school, Yule was off to the University where he would spend most of his life working and studying in the mathematics discipline. Yule's university days as a student were spent at Winchester College and University College, London, where he studied civil engineering. He was unable to get a degree in this field because there were none available in the subject at the time. After turning away from civil engineering and leaving University College, Yule spent a year working with Heinrich Hertz. The investigations Yule did with Hertz on the passage of electric waves through dialects lead to Yule's first published paper. This was just the first of many of Yule's accomplishments. In 1893, Yule again made a career change when he accepted a demonstratorshiip position under Karl Pearson. Among other things, some of his main duties under Pearson were to draw up class plans, prepare specimen diagrams, and to critique Pearson's work. After working at this new position for a while, it was clear that Yule himself was beginning to think like a statistician rather than a civil engineer.

George Udny Yule
Pioneering statistican. Born in Morham (East Lothian), Yule was the son of an adminstrator of colonial India. The family moved to London and Yule was educated at Winchester College and University College London, where he studied engineering. By the early 1890s, Yule had developed interests in statistics and began to work on correlation and regression, writing a series of landmark papers. Yule was appointed Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics at University College in 1896, but became Secretary to the City and Guilds Examination Board in 1899, although his research output continued undiminished. He moved to the University of Cambridge in 1912 and remained there until his retirement in 1922. His publications include On the Theory of Correlation (1897) and the noted Introduction to the Theory of Statistics (1911, with multiple succeeding editions). He also wrote papers which applied statistics to fields in the social sciences, epidemiology, agriculture and textual analysis. Yule took a major role in the Royal Statistical Society, serving as their Secretary (1907-19) and President (1924-26) and was awarded their prestigious Guy Medal in Gold (1911). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1922 and was also recognised by the award of a CBE. He died in a nursing home in Cambridge.

The Tale of Old Christmas
Performed in the door to door or village to village fashion as Wassail songs and other seasonal folk customs, here is an example of a traditional Mummers play. Note the appeal for money and beer at the end... Dramatis Personae
FATHER CHRISTMAS
KING GEORGE
TURKISH KNIGHT (a brave fellow)
THE DOCTOR (a quack) (ENTER FATHER CHRISTMAS) FATHER CHRISTMAS: In comes I, old Father Christmas Welcome or welcome not, 1 hope old Father Christmas Will never be forgot. Christmas comes but once a year When it does it brings good cheer; with a pocket full of money and a cellar full of beer. Roast beef, plum pudding and mince pie. Who likes them better than I? I want room, acres of room, For after me comes King George, with all his noble train. In this room there shall soon be a battle More dreadful than ever was known, Betwixt King George and the Turkish Knight. Enter in King George, and boldly clear the way, For old Father Christmas has only got A short time for to stay. (ENTER KING GEORGE) KING GEORGE In comes King George, so bold, so grand. I do appear, with my old tribes and Britons By my side. I am come to close this year. Here is England's rights, here England's wrongs, Here's England's admirations. When I pull out my old trusty rapier, Is there a man before me can stand That I can't knock him down With my created hand?

Sorry for the time lag from the thread, I've been out
and about a bit...
There is a whole discipline that has been looking at
authorship attribution, called Stylometrics (which
charts its origins back to the end of the last century).
A large number of metrics have been proposed, many very
relevant for corpus analysis. A chunk of references
follow, blatantly including my thesis. Recent work has
used neural networks to "evaluate" authorship, albeit with
rather simple networks, looking at the Federalist Papers as well as Shakespeare. The approach here has been to compare occurrences of particular words, such as did/did+do. Some work (Ledger's on Plato) also considered chronological change in style of an author (he used multivariate analysis).

This module provides a general introduction on a descriptive level to the
main design features of human language. It complements modules in other
departments on language and/or literature, sociolinguistics and
computational linguistics. It makes students aware of basic concepts of
descriptive analysis which are relevant to more advanced and specialized
modules at levels 2 and 3.
Aims of the module
  • To promote an understanding of linguistic structure on a descriptive level. To promote an understanding of the methods and principles of descriptive linguistic analysis.
