The London Magazine was founded in 182 by John Scott (1783-1821) as a rival to the Gentleman's Magazine . It was a non-political magazine that concentrated on the world of literature. In 1821 Scott accused a rival journal, Blackwood's Magazine , of libel. A representative of the journal, J. H. Christie, challenged Scott to a duel. Scott accepted and died as result of the wounds received during the fight. Scot's policy of supporting young writers was continued under his replacement, John Taylor (1781-1864).

103. There Is That Within Us That Can Call A Stone Young -- William R. Stimson
But I can ask myself What is like a stone in that it is still young? Having nothing to go on, I can only assume the obvious.

"There Is That Within Us
That Can Call A Stone Young"
"…is like stone in that it is still young." I wake up in the night with these words in my mind. Nothing more. A fragment. A piece of a different way of seeing things. Not a dream. Something different. What does it mean? From the other side, things are seen in a different way. Some timeless chunk of rock drifting through space, on a collision course with eternity. "…still young"? Yes. This is the amazing thing. That there is that within us which can call a stone young. There is another way of seeing things. There is another side. We get glimpses of it. That is all. When we are awake, when we are asleep, it comes to us. When we are dreaming, when we are not, it is there. We are informed by another source. Only that we seem so poor in understanding that we can't make very much of what it is that other source is informing us about. We have no inkling of what that other source is. In the truest sense of the word, then, we don't know what it is we are or are about. Our education has not been in this direction. We have ways of considering ourself — what we are as a species — Homo sapiens— that don't take into account the beginnings of our real biology. What was that voice Abraham heard in the desert? — the voice that brought the Jews into being as a people. "In the beginning was the word…" Last night in my sleep, I heard a little snippet of that "Word".

Jeffery S. Young, William L. Simon: iCon Steve Jobs
Wiley, Hardcover $38.95 Apple Computer banned this book from its retail stores for its less-than-flattering title. An odd move, but typical of the company's leadership. Apart from a close look at the relationship between Pixar and Disney, iCon offers little fresh on Apple CEO Steve Jobs's well-documented taciturn personality. However, the authors manage to leverage a fresh angle with currency, portraying well Jobs's journey to the top of his game in three industries. Readers of Alan Deutschmann's The Second Coming of Steve Jobs will feel the deja vu, but

If you're searching the Internet for information on Billy the Kid then you've come to the right place. This site has plenty of information on the legendary outlaw William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid. No other historical figure from the Old West has stirred up more controversy and eluded historians and biographers than Billy the Kid. This young man in his short life has established his place in history and legend, but there is more to the myth there's the man, which in my opinion is far more interesting. On this website you'll learn who Billy the Kid really was and how he became a legend in his own time.

Are Women Human?
Dorothy L. Sayers
Central to Sayers’s reflections is the conviction that both men and women are first of all human beings and must be regarded as essentially much more alike than different. We are to be true not so much to our sex as to our humanity. The proper role of both men and women, in her view, is to find the work for which they are suited and to do it. read more The Way into Narnia

The President
and
The Janitor
The kindly old janitor neatly tucked the mop and brooms back into the closet, reached up briefly to brush a drop of sweat from his wrinkled brow, then closed the door to the tools of his trade for another evening. Slowly he walked across the highly polished floor towards the exit that would take him to the parking lot, where his old but reliable car would transport him to the modest house he had built in the foothills near the U.S. Air Force Academy. To the casual observer, the janitor was just another ordinary guy, putting in his time at the job that supplemented his retirement income and spending his free time working in the garden he loved.
As he walked through the hallway he had just spent his afternoon cleaning and polishing to military perfection, the "cream of the crop" of America's youth noted his passing. "Have a good evening, Mr. Crawford," they would say as he passed. He'd nod back with a smile. Young enough to be his own children, idealistic and patriotic enough to share his kindred spirit, he thought of them as his adopted kids. To them, he was more than just a janitor, he was second father. And through the long months of study to become officers in the United States Air Force, as they came to know Bill Crawford better, he also became their hero. He was an "every-day" kind of guy, doing an "every-day" kind of job, but none would ever consider him "ORDINARY".

On hearing Bell's performance of this one excerpt, Reiner engaged him for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra; there was no need for Bell to play other music in the audition. In 1927, in Cincinnati, William Bell married the love of his life, Agnes Haacke who became affectionately known to a legion of musicians as "Aggie." With his marriage to Aggie, he gained a step-daughter, Phillipa Solomon (1917-1995). On December 12, 1934 daughter Nancy was born. Bell's adoring wife, Aggie, died in 1963.
