His interests, however, began to turn to sociology and psychology and during the academic year, 1893-1894, Thomas spent two quarters on a fellowship in the newly founded department of sociology at the University of Chicago, studying with Albion W. Small and Charles R. Henderson. Although he continued at Oberlin on a half-year basis till 1895, in 1894 he began giving courses there in sociology. In 1895 he accepted an instructorship in sociology at Chicago and in the year following completed his doctorate. Shortly thereafter he was appointed assistant professor. His promotion to an associate professorship came in 1900, and his full professorship a decade later. Thomas' first professional writing had to do with sex differences, especially role and status, as affected by custom and institution. His various papers on the topic comprise the content of his first published work, Sex and Society

I can't help feeling a bit empty these days. My outlook may be over-analytical or a bit too negative, but I can't help feeling like I'm waiting. As 2005 rang in, I wondered, what's next?
Comparing the unique decades of the twentieth century, I was suprised to see that each brought a momentum that served to build upon the growing confidence of our very unique Nation. I'm a bit eccentric and sometimes do some "strange" things, like talking with older people to gauge their own feelings about today's World, you know WWII vets, retired steelworkers, farmers, etc...
When JFK was shot dead, they say the World stopped for a second. Of course that was a much different time, but I wonder...what if the same scenario happened today? Today, were respect is earned through...........what was that again? I quess that I might have to tune into CNN to find out.

ARTicles > Biography of William Bouguereau :: Page Concise Biography: Family Roots and Birth
The origin of the Bouguereau surname arose in the high Middle Ages and certain specialists in genealogy suppose that the family name is similar to the word bogue or “chestnut husk”. That is to say; that the name is associated with “chestnut”, although that does remain conjectural. Genealogical research on William Bouguereau’s family does not reach earlier than the beginning of the 16th century when a certain Macé Bouguereau, living in La Rochelle, married a Dame Bastienne Briot around the year 1530. It is from that union that the lineage of William Bouguereau descended. Let us point out, for the benefit of non-European readers, that La Rochelle, the capital of Aunis, is an old harbour city of moderate importance in the départment of Charente Inférieure, subsequently renamed Charente Maritime
Historically La Rochelle was reputed to be the center of French Calvinism thus earning the name la Geneve Francais. Traditionally Catholic and Protestants intermarried freely here and young men traditionally took the religion of their fathers and young girls that of their mothers. The descendants of Macé Bouguereau, little by little, formed family bonds with the Calvinists, of which there were traditionally many in La Rochelle. Those who remained in Charente after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes held, for the most part, official posts in the city. Many, for example, held positions in the mint up to the time of the French Revolution. The last of the line to do so was Jean Élie Bouguereau, Chief Minter for La Rochelle.

These Islands had no doubt been already discovered and inhabited by Pacific Islanders, and possibly also discovered by other non English speaking nations. This page refers to the first recorded discovery by users of the English language. The Young William left London on 11th of September 1794, headed for Port Jackson in New South Wales (Australia) and then China. Port Jackson is today better known as Sydney harbour. The log book records that in Port Jackson on Monday 26th October 1795, that Ralf Greeve and George Williamson were absent without leave. With permission of the Govenor the following people were shipped - William Burges, Rudd, Charles Cornish and Edward Willen. Prior to departing Port Jackson on the 28th of October 1795, the Young William was searched for convict stowaways. Three male convicts were found and based on information received, a female convict was found in the Chief Mate's chest. The Chief Mate was discharged at his own request. The first set of Mortlock Islands, also known as the Takuu group were sighted on 19th November 1795.

Yet Ardizzone also created an imaginative universe of his own. He illustrated the classics (Dickens, Thackeray, even Shakespeare), but he's best remembered for his children's stories, especially his exquisite Tim books the nautical adventures for children (of all ages), which he wrote, and drew. Recently republished by Scholastic, these affectionate and thrilling tales are a fitting testament to his delicate, dynamic talent. Tim was just one aspect of his work. This unassuming storyteller's career ranged from advertising to autobiography. With drawings and lithographs, plus 100 first editions, this exhibition shows that Ardizzone's vision was universal and unique.

by Jim Powell Mr. Powell is editor of Laissez-Faire Books and Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute. He has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, American Heritage, Reprinted on www.quaker.org by permission. William Penn was the first great hero of American liberty. During the late seventeenth century, when Protestants persecuted Catholics, Catholics persecuted Protestants, and both persecuted Quakers and Jews, Penn established an American sanctuary which protected freedom of conscience. Almost everywhere else, colonists stole land from the Indians, but Penn traveled unarmed among the Indians and negotiated peaceful purchases. He insisted that women deserved equal rights with men. He gave Pennsylvania a written constitution which limited the power of government, provided a humane penal code, and guaranteed many fundamental liberties. For the first time in modem history, a large society offered equal rights to people of different races and religions. Penn's dramatic example caused quite a stir in Europe. The French philosopher Voltaire, a champion of religious toleration, offered lavish praise. "William Penn might, with reason, boast of having brought down upon earth the Golden Age, which in all probability, never had any real existence but in his dominions. " Penn was the only person who made major contributions to liberty in both the New World and the Old World. Before he conceived the idea of Pennsylvania, he became the leading defender of religious toleration in England. He was imprisoned six times for speaking out courageously. While in prison, he wrote one pamphlet after another, which gave Quakers a literature and attacked intolerance. He alone proved capable of challenging oppressive government policies in courtone of his cases helped secure the right to trial by jury. Penn used his diplomatic skills and family connections to get large numbers of Quakers out of jail. He saved many from the gallows.

    http://www2.localaccess.com/marlowe/hatcliffe.htm
Why William Hatcliffe wasn't the mysterious "Mr. W. H." of the Sonnets of Christopher Marlowe aka William Shakespeare: The question of who "Mr. W. H." was has been long and hotly debated . We have given ample reasons for why it was William Herbert , later the Third Earl of Pembroke, who appears to have been Marlowe's illicit son. Since Marlowe wrote the sonnets, Herbet is also the poet's illegitimate son and we shall hereafter refer to him simply as the poet's son. ( link However I thought to devote a brief discussion to why he cannot have been Mr. William Hatcliffe, as suggested by the Harvard scholar Leslie Hotson and, later, by my friend and fellow Marlovain, A. D. Wraight. Hotson's evidence consists in ignoring the painfully obvious class differences between the poet and "Mr. W. H." Those differences place "Mr. W.H." among members of the so called "higher nobility," as Sir E. K. Chambers understood all too well. Here is what Chamber's wrote about this conundrum, after a lifetime of study.

His Birth: W illiam Branham was born in the early morning hours of April 06, 1909 in Burksville, Kentucky. The log cabin which was to be his home as a child seemed, to modern eyes, an unlikely place for God to manifest His Presence in a supernatural - vindicating this child, even from birth.
First Commission: eptember 1916. I his was the first time that William Branham 'heard' the Angel speak. He told young William of the Commission he was ordained to fulfill when he got older. Little did this boy realize the impact his life would have on the world. But for the present, the voice of the angel speaking to him, seemed a frightening experience.

F rom the time that he was a very young man, William Branham had a "strong desire" in his heart to go West. At the age of about fourteen years old, while recovering from surgery for gunshot wounds, he thought he was standing on the western prairies, looking at a cross in the sky. And the glory of the cross of shining down upon him. The "Call of the West" ever remained with him. W hen he was about sixteen years old he borrowed a piece of paper and wrote a poem which was "strangely prophetic" in it's contents: I am lonesome, oh, so lonesome for that far away southwest, W here the shadows fall the deepest over the mountain crest. I can see a lurking coyote all around the purple haze; I can hear a lobo hollering down where the longhorns graze. A nd somewhere up a canyon I can hear a lion whine, I n that far off Catalina Mountains at the Arizona line. A s a young, Kentucky, hillbilly lad of sixteen, he had never been in Arizona. Little did William Branham realize then that these Catalina mountains would play a significant part in the Commission and Ministry which would be fulfilled in his life. Many years would pass before he would realize this.

TV News Registers Rung by Young William Hung (Wednesday, April 14, 2004, 11:32 AM) LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - On April 27, the finalists of FOX's "American Idol" will release a singles collection titled "Greatest Soul Classics." That album will, almost certainly, outsell "Inspiration," the first recording by "Idol" reject William Hung. However, the finalists will have had to go to all the extra trouble of knowing how to sing, while Hung has hit the charts just being himself. Hung's album debuted at No. 34 on the latest Billboard 200 pop albums chart. Early estimates actually had insiders guessing that Hung would debut in the Top 30, based on sales of between 30,000 and 40,000 copies. While that debut came in more than 400,000 records behind Usher's chart-topping "Confessions," it was nearly on par with the latest release by future "Idol" guest judge Barry Manilow. The undertalented Hung was a University of California, Berkeley civil engineering major when he went to the San Francisco try-outs for FOX's popular talent show. His hilariously off-key performance and gracious acceptance of judge Simon Cowell's insults won him a legion of fans. Hung signed a contract with Koch Records in March. At the time, Alan Grunblatt, the company's general manager and executive vice president, described him as "The New Elvis."

For Mr. and Mrs. William Pitsenbarger, the September 22, 1966 visit to the home of America's military men and women had all the elements of culture shock. It was like walking into a whole new world, a world separated from their small hometown of Piqua, Ohio by more than miles. Introduction
FM William Morrison recently tied for 1st at the St. John's International tournament and earned his 2nd IM norm in the process. The native New Yorker now lives outside of Baltimore with Marjorie , his wife of ten years, and their two children, Destiny , 10, and Jonathon , 5. William honed his chess skills at the famous "Black Bear School of Chess," but it was in Maryland that he became known as the "Exterminator." Since then William has become a Baltimore legend and hopes to win the IM title this summer at either the World Open , or the Wilbert Paige Memorial . The Chess Drum spent two hours chatting with the personable family man and what follows are some of his reflections on his chess beginnings, his subsequent development, and finally the winning of his 2nd IM norm.
    FM William Morrison
    A Family Affair
William Morrison's rise to chess prominence was an event that was meant to happen. The Morrison family was involved in the royal game as William's father taught his seven children (four girls, three boys) the moves at an early age. William was six when he learned the moves, and has fond memories of playing within the family. A few years after learning the moves, young William did the inevitable… beat his father. At that moment Mr. Morrison would refuse to play William. However, William found competition with his siblings and his mother. "I remember playing my mother with the entire family looking on… I was losing this particular game. She had a Rook and King versus a King and could not checkmate me." Having won household "bragging rights" a couple of years later, the 12-year old ventured out and began playing at the Brooklyn Public Library where small tournaments were held.
