Justus Grassmann (1779-1852), father of Hermann Grassmann, was mathematics teacher at the Gymnasium in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland). His work focused on combinatorial geometry. In Zahlenlehre (1827) he articulated his ideas about the foundations of mathematics, with the concept of construction (synthesis) as its basis. C ourageous: Marie-Yolande Saint-Fleur Port-au-Prince, Haiti Marie-Yolande Saint-Fleur, as a photographer and founder of "Agence Haitienne d'Images," captured the repression of Haiti's citizens and the violence of its military rulers. At the time of her Courage in Journalism award, the Committee to Protect Journalists reported, " The military coup that toppled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide abruptly ended a flourishing period for the Haitian media. The Haitian Armed Forces and their paramilitary squads intimidated and attacked news outlets."
Because of her photographs, Saint-Fleur was targeted by both the military and armed civilians. Her photo agency was forced to close after the coup and Saint-Fleur, fearing for her life, was forced into hiding, fleeing to remote areas of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In 1993, she returned to Haiti, but after she was shot at and armed civilians repeatedly threatened her because of her continued reporting, Saint-Fleur sought refuge in the United States.Fleur received the " 1995 Courage in Journalism Award" from the International Women's Media Foundation <http://www.iwmf.org/index.htm>

Ohio becomes the 17th state on March 1, the first state in the Northwest Territory. Jared Mansfield , a graduate of Yale, begins his work as United States Surveyor General. He establishes a principal meridian, that will become the boundary between Ohio and Indiana, at the mouth of the Great Miami River and begins to lay out a grid of north-south and east-west range lines. After the War of 1812 he will become professor of natural philosophy at West Point. The city of Mansfield, Ohio, is named for him. Ohio University, founded by Manasseh Cutler and Rufus Putnam, is chartered as the first public institution of higher education in the Northwest Territory. It will be 15 years before college classes are held, with James Irvine as the first professor of mathematics. Carl Friedrich Gauss publishes a memoir on the method of least squares. Miami University is chartered. It will be 15 years before college classes are held, with John Annan as the first professor of mathematics. Sophie Germain receives the grand prize from the French Academie des Sciences for her solution to a problem on vibrations of elastic surfaces.

1851 to 1900 Setting the scene The development of universities throughout Europe along with scientific societies begins to make it possible for relatively poor people and people without wealthy patrons to study science. During this period scientists begin to travel much more widely in order to exchange ideas with fellow scientists at conferences and other meetings. England lags rather behind the times with these developments, as much teaching is still done by churchmen and the emphasis is on practical ideas. In the USA science is also the poor relation. The emphasis in that rapidly developing country is on technology - machines and gadgets to make life easier. Early in this period President Louis Napoleon of France declares himself the emperor Napoleon III. He is later disgraced, leading his country to defeat in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. Karl Marx writes Das Kapital , his book about economics and society.

The London Mathematical Society's (LMS's) Women in Mathematics Committee has announced a new fund, the so-called Grace Chisholm Young Fellowships. These fellowships aim to provide some support to get a researcher in mathematics started again when their career has been interrupted for personal reasons. Support will come under the form of a host institute being sponsored with £500 to provide fellows with the use of facilities such as library and IT equipment. Candidates must be based in a mathematics department in a university or research institute in the UK but cannot be already considered as employees. If you are an industrious molecular biologist in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, it is worth noting that the Engelhorn Foundation has announced its 2005 Young Researcher Prize under the heading of "Molecular Determined Function". The prize, which is worth €10,000, is specifically aimed at researchers under 35 years of age. Closing date for application is 31 July 2004. The Engelhorn Foundation also funds outstanding postdoctoral research projects in the life sciences particularly in biotechnology and genetics. More information can be found on the foundation's

Georg Simon Ohm

Georg Simon Ohm was born to Johann Wolfgang Ohm and Maria Elizabeth Beck in 1787 in Erlangen. His father, Johann Wolfgang, was a self-taught man in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and philosophy brought this knowledge to his children. Georg Simon learned more science from his father than he did at Erlangen Gymnasium. Ohm entered the University of Erlangen but lost funding for it by his father after three semesters because Georg was too interested in student life. He then became a mathematics teacher in a school in Gottstadt bei Nydau. Ohm wished to go with Karl Christian von Lagsdrof to the University of Heidlelberg to continue his mathematics education, but Lagsdrof suggested that Ohm teach himself. Ohm studied Euler, Laplace, Lacroix, Lagrange, Legendre, Laplace, Biot, and Poisson and taught himself much mathematics. He eventually received a doctorate from Erlangen and started working towards his lifetime goal of gaining a high position in a university. Ohm taught math and physics at a poor school in Bamberg where he wrote an elementary book on teaching geometry. In 1817, He became a physics and math teacher at the Jesuit Gymnasium of Cologne where he had access to a laboratory and began experiments after the discovery of electromagnetism by Oersted. Ohm began to seriously experiment and publish after he realized it would be what it would take to reach his life goal. His first paper was written in 1825, which describes the decrease in electromagnetic force produced by an increased wire length. He also wrote two papers that expanded Fourier’s study of heat conduction that gave a mathematical description of conduction in circuits.

Tthe New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) opens a new commodities market for power supplies. According to Fleishman, the volatility would help establish a "transparent, competitive price" for power and thus nourish the power industry’s move to a newly deregulated playing field.

This article chronicles the struggle in nineteenth-century England for women to be admitted to university mathematical examinations and to take degrees. By 1880, a campaign had "gained the girls permission to sit at the same examinations as the men (in different rooms, of course)." In that year, Charlotte Agnes Scott became the first woman wrangler by placing eighth in the Mathematical Tripos. The omission of her name in the official list because of her gender caused a public uproar and led to a petition for women's educational rights that had more than 10,000 signatures. In the 1890's, both Grace Chisholm Young and Phillipa Fawcett were recorded as placing "above the Senior Wrangler" in the Tripos examinations. All three ofthese women went on to distinguished careers: Scott at Bryn Mawr, Young (with her husband and former tutor W. H. Young) at Cambridge, and Fawcett in London. PR

One of the outstanding problems in Plato scholarship is the interpretation of the so-called Nuptial Number of Book VIII (546 B-D) of The Republic. According to Young's translation [8, p. 28-9], we are dealing with a "geometrical number" (whatever that may be!) that is lord over all these affairs, over better and worse births; and when in ignorance of them, the guardians unite the brides and bridegrooms wrongly, the children will not be well-endowed, either in their constitutions or in their fates.
