Historical outline
The Indo-Greek kingdom was established by Demetrius , the son of the Greco-Bactrian king Euthydemus
Occupation of Northern India
Demetrius started the invasion of northern India from 180 BCE , following the destruction of the Mauryan dynasty by the general Pusyamitra Sunga , who then founded the new Indian Sunga dynasty 78 BCE ). Greek conquest temporarily went as far as the capital Pataliputra in eastern India (today Patna
"Those who came after Alexander went to the Ganges and Pataliputra Strabo

The Indian records also describe Greek attacks on Mathura Panchala Saketa , and Pataliputra . This is particularly the case of some mentions of the invasion by Patanjali around 150 BCE, and of the Yuga Purana, which describes Indian historical events in the form of a prophecy:
"After having conquered Saketa, the country of the Panchala and the Mathuras , the Yavanas (Greeks), wicked and valliant, will reach Kusumadhvaja ( Pataliputra (Gargi-Samhita, Yuga Purana chapter).

The second is said to have the shape of a bull; it is the mouth and throat of the Creator. Its places are those of forests, mountains, ridges, elephants, herds of cows, and farmers. 16. The third is a couple (a woman and a man) holding a lyre and a club (respectively); it is the region of the shoulders and arms of Prajspati. Its places are those of dancers, singers, artisans, and women, and (places for) playing games, sexual intercourse, gambling, and recreation. 17. The fourth, which has the form of a crab standing in water and which is the region of the chest, is called Karki (Karkyos). Several cuneiform horoscopes have been excavated, the earliest dated to the year 410 B.C. This, like most of the horoscopes found on clay tablets, comes from the city of Babylon; although some cuneiform horoscopes from the city of Uruk, south of Babylon, have also come to the light of day. The sole content of these early horoscopes was the tabulation of the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets in relation to the twelve signs of the zodiac. No other astrological element is mentioned or depicted. Thus there is no mention of houses or of the ascendant, which is used to define the houses; nor are aspects between the planets referred to, apart from the obvious aspect of conjunction (when two planets are together in the same part of the zodiac.) For example, the text accompanying the horoscope of Aristocrates (Uruk, 3 rd June, 235 B.C.) reads: Jupiter in 18° Sagittarius. The place of Jupiter (means)...he will become rich, he will grow old, (his) days will be numerous. Venus in 4° Taurus.

1-3. The great sage Narada continued: My dear King, once upon a time King Puranjana took up his great bow, and equipped with golden armor and a quiver of unlimited arrows and accompanied by eleven commanders, he sat on his chariot driven by five swift horses and went to the forest named Panca-prastha. He took with him in that chariot two explosive arrows. The chariot itself was situated on two wheels and one revolving axle. On the chariot were three flags, one rein, one chariot driver, one sitting place, two poles to which the harness was fixed, five weapons and seven coverings. The chariot moved in five different styles, and five obstacles lay before it. All the decorations of the chariot were made of gold.
    4. It was almost impossible for King Puranjana to give up the company of his Queen even for a moment. Nonetheless, on that day, being very much inspired by the desire to hunt, he took up his bow and arrow with great pride and went to the forest, not caring for his wife.
    5. At that time King Puranjana was very much influenced by demoniac propensities. Because of this, his heart became very hard and merciless, and with sharp arrows he killed many innocent animals in the forest, taking no consideration.

Sage Yavana, who belonged to the Alexander period, wrote Yavana Jataka. He was an astrologer in the Greek court in India. Because of this he was called Yavanacharya or Greek Guru, and hence a lot of western astrologers claim that Indians learned astrology from the Greeks!! There are a few areas where his interpretations of results are different. Because of this it is an important classic. The teachings of Yavanacharya were recorded by a king called Sphujidhwaja.
