Professor Yau obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1971, under Professor Chern's supervision. After spending a year at the Institute for Advanced Study, he taught successively at S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook, at Stanford University, at the Institute for Advanced Study, at the University of California at San Diego, and at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1987 he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University, a position he has held ever since.
His fields of research are differential geometry, differential equations and general relativity. He has received the highest awards for his outstanding contributions. Besides the Fields Medal (1982), he was awarded the Veblen Prize (1981), the Carty Prize of the National Academy (1981), the Crafoord Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy(1994), and the National Medal of Science, U.S.A. (1997). In 1979, he was elected California Scientist of the year. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, ot the Chinese Academy of Sciences, of the Academia Sinica, and of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has received four honorary doctorates and he is an honorary professor of many universities.

by Prof. Shing-Tung Yau Mathematics Department Harvard University Date/Time: Friday, Jan 16th, 2004, Period 7, 1:55-2:45 pm,
Location : CSE Building, Room 119 Abstract: We describe a way to organize three dimensional computer graphics using methods of differential geometry and algebraic curve theory. From a large set of points in space, we need to compute the geometry of a surface. We proceed by computing the conformal structure of the surfaces and also all the conformal invariants associated with the surfaces. In particular, we compute their period matrices and related holomorphic quadratic differentials. These are used to identify and reconstruct the surfaces. The method is good for recognition registration and data compression; since the parameterization is global, it is also good for the problem of constructing texture. About the Speaker: Professor Shing-Tung Yau was awarded a Fields Medal in 1982 for his contributions in the area of geometric partial differential equations, including his solution of the Calabi Conjecture in algebraic geometry, his solution of the Positive Mass Conjecture in general relativity, and his work on real and complex Monge-Ampere equations.

Objectives
We are bringing together researchers in arithmetic algebraic geometry, algebraic cycles and K-theory, complex algebraic geometry, and researchers in mathematical physics working on mirror symmetry, and (mathematical aspects of) string theory. We hope to facilitate communications between mathematicians and mathematical physicists on these subjects. The main problems to be discussed at the workshop include: A : Arithmetic of CalabiYau varieties and mirror symmetry: Arithmetic of elliptic curves, K3 surfaces, CalabiYau threefolds, and higher dimensional CalabiYau varieties in connection with mirror symmetry. These will include the following topics and problems: Interpretation of mirror symmetry phenomena of CalabiYau varieties in terms of zeta-functions and L-series of the varieties in question, the modularity conjectures for CalabiYau varieties, the conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for elliptic curves and Abelian varieties, the conjectures of BeilinsonBloch on special values of L-series and algebraic cycles. CalabiYau varieties of CM (complex multiplication) type and their possible connections to rational conformal field theories.

Abstract
The status and the future of mathematics will be reviewed, and the role and applications of mathematics in various subjects such as physics, engineering, information technology, and economics will be discussed.
About the Speaker ... ...
Professor Yau, Shing Tung is the world renowned mathematician who is the only Chinese being awarded the Fields Medal (the Fields Medal has played the role of the Nobel Prize in Mathematics). The Fields Medal (1982) is a formal recognition for his contributions in the partial differential equations, the Calabi conjecture in algebraic geometry, the positive mass conjecture of general relativity theory, and the real and complex Monge-Ampere equations. Prof. Yau was born in Shantou in 1949, and then immigrated to Hong Kong. After graduating from Pui Ching Middle School in 1966, he completed his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He studied for his doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley and received his Ph.D. in 1971. Between 1971 and 1987 he held appointments at a number of institutions, including Stanford University (1974-79), the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N.J. (1979-84), and the University of California, San Diego (1984-87). He is now a Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University and has joint appointments as Professor of Mathematics of the Chinese University and the Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS) in the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
