Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Professor Shing-Tung Yau Fields medalist, William Casper Graustein Professor of Mathematics, Harvard University Introduction
Professor Shing-Tung Yau was awarded a Fields Medal in 1982 for his contributions in the area of geometric partial differential equations, including his solution of the Calabi Conjecture in algebraic geometry, his solution of the Positive Mass Conjecture in general relativity, and his work on real and complex Monge-Ampere equations. In other work Yau constructed minimal surfaces, studied their stability, and made a deep analysis of how they behave in space-time. His work here has implications for the formation of black holes. Yau's contributions in minimal surfaces also include an important result on the Plateau problem. This problem was posed by Lagrange in 1760 and was studied by Plateau, Weierstrass, Riemann, and Schwarz, but remained open until being solved independently by by Douglas and Rado in the late 1920s. However, there were still questions relating to whether Douglas's solution, which was known to be a smooth immersed surface, is actually embedded. Yau, working with W. H. Meeks, solved this problem in 1980. In their joint paper On the existence of Hermitian Yang-Mills connections in stable bundles (1986), Yau and Karen Uhlenbeck gave a solution of higher-dimensional versions of the Hitchin-Kobayashi conjecture, extending work of Simon Donaldson.

Computational Conformal Geometry
All surfaces are Riemann surfaces, they have intrinsic conformal structures, which are invariants under global conformal transformation groups. Conformal stuctures are geometric characteristics between topology and Euclidean geometry. I will focus on computing conformal structures for general surfaces, and applied them in shape anylasis, surface classification, surface matching, geometric compression. Covariant differentiation can be performed by means of conformal structures, this is essential for solving differential equations on surfaces. Harmonic shape anylasis
The functional space on a surface is determined by the surface geometric characteristics. The harmonic spectrum can reflect many global geometric information of the surface. The surface matching, shape anylasis can be carried out by examing the behavior of special differential operators on surfaces. Geometry Image
Geometry Image unifies the representations for geometry and textures. Signal processing techniques for images can be applied to geometry directly. Computer graphics hardware can speed up rendering efficiency by using geometry image.

Abstract:

In the past thirty years, differential geometry has received a lot of impact from ideas of physics, particularly from general relativity, gauge theory and string theory. Professor Yau will talk about some of these developments, both past and current. Some open questions may be discussed. Background:
Shing-Tung Yau is universally regarded as the greatest differential geometer of his generation. His profound work has impacted such diverse fields as topology, algebraic geometry, general relativity, and string theory. Yau was born in China in 1949. In 1982, he was awarded the Fields medal for his contributions to partial differential equations, to the Calabi conjecture in algebraic geometry, to the positive mass conjecture of general relativity, and to real and complex Monge-Ampere equations. In 1997, he was awarded the National Medal of Science, the highest scientific honor in the US. He has won numerous awards and honors and is a member of several scientific academies. He is currently at Harvard.
