Last summer, Professor Coates held a mathematics workshop at Zhejiang University which provided Chinese students as well as those from neighboring countries with a chance to gain ideas and stimulation from world's top mathematicians. "The best students in China equal the world's best," Professor Coates told Xinhua. "Those students even solved the problems that I encountered in my research." He admitted that to compare with the world's top universities, Chinese universities were still lagging behind in terms of mathematics research level. Coates received the International Cooperation Award at this year's International Congress of Chinese Mathematics.

Shing-Tung Yau at Harvard Law School dining hall Shing-Tung Yau Pinyin April 4 ) is a prominent mathematician working in differential geometry , and involved in the theory of Calabi-Yau manifolds . He was born in Shantou Guangdong Province China with an ancestry in Jiaoling (also in Guangdong) in a family of seven children. His father died when he was 14. Yau moved to Hong Kong with his family and studied mathematics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1966 to 1969. He did his graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley , where his advisor was S. S. Chern . After receiving his Ph.D. in 1971, he spent a post-doctoral year at the Institute for Advanced Study . He then spent two years as an assistant professor at Stony Brook University . In 1974 he was appointed a professor at Stanford University . He returned to the Institute for Advanced Study as a professor in 1979. From 1984 to 1987 he was a professor at UC San Diego . In 1987 he moved to Harvard University , where he remains. Yau has received a number of prominent awards. These include the Fields Medal in 1983, a

At recent lectures, mathematics and computer-science maestros, Prof Yau Shing-Tung and Prof Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, shared with UST students and faculty members the secrets of effective learning and cutting-edge cryptography techniques. Both of them were awarded honorary doctorates by UST at its Twelfth Congregation on 12 November 2004. Other stories: Great Minds Congregate at UST Groundbreaking for New Enterprise Center A world-renowned mathematician, Prof Yau Shing-Tung received his undergraduate education in Hong Kong before going to UC Berkeley to study under the supervision of Prof Shiing Shen Chern. In 1982, his accomplishments in partial differential equations and algebraic geometry garnered him a Fields Medal, regarded as the Nobel Prize of mathematics. He is currently the Chair Professor of Mathematics at Harvard, as well as Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Prof Yau's lecture, titled "The Path to Learning", took place on 11 November in the Lam Woo Lecture Theater. Prof Yau quoted extensively from Chinese classical works, illustrating how one may establish a positive outlook on life and learning by drawing inspiration from culture. The one-hour lecture drew an attentive audience, among whom were 100 secondary school students.

Professor Yau Shing-Tung's work has led us to a better understanding of theoretical physics and mathematics, and indeed of life itself. He has been driven by a fascination for the beauty of nature, which is expressed not only in his famous mathematical equations but also his deep appreciation of poetry and philosophy. That such talent and drive have emerged from a childhood marked by sadness and hardship only adds to the astonishment at his achievements. The catalyst for his studies was closely linked to events at home. Prof Yau's father and his students would hold long discussions on philosophy. This exposure made him feel at home with the axiomatic approaches that he later realized were central to mathematics. Sadly, however, his father died when he was 14. It was the greatest shock of his life and created additional financial hardship for the family. But Prof Yau's mother was determined that he continue his studies, and his father's friends and students helped out. Prof Yau delved deeper into the complexities of his beloved geometry throughout the rest of his high school years, largely through self-study. At the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he began to meet the teachers, and ideas, that would propel him towards becoming a world-renowned mathematician. He was recommended for graduate studies at Berkeley before even finishing his degree in Hong Kong. There, he came under the wing of the brilliant mathematician, Prof Shiing Shen Chern.

Shing-Tung Yau studied for his doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley under Chern 's supervision. He received his Ph.D. in 1971 and, during session 1971-72, Yau was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Yau was appointed assistant professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1972. In 1974 he was appointed an associate professor at Stanford University. He was promoted to full professor at Stanford before returning to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton in 1979. In 1980 he was made a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, a position he held until 1984 when he moved to a chair at the University of California at San Diego. In 1988 he was appointed professor at Harvard University. Yau was awarded a Fields Medal in 1982 for his contributions to partial differential equations , to the Calabi conjecture in algebraic geometry , to the positive mass conjecture of general relativity theory, and to real and complex Monge equations. In fact the 1982 Fields Medals were announced at a meeting of the General Assembly of the
