Next Prominent Poles Jozef Maria Hoene-Wronski, mathematician, philosopher Born: August 23, 1778, in Wolsztyn, Poland Died: August 8, 1853, in Neuilly (near Paris), France Introduction. Hoene-Wronski was born Jozef Hoene but he adopted the name Wronski around 1810 just after he married. He had moved to France and became a French citizen in 1800 and then, in 1810 he moved to Paris. In 1810 Wronski presented to the Institute of France a memoir on the so-called Technie de l'Algorithmie, The memoir consisted merely of a statement of results, and probably on this account, although favourably reported on by Lagrange and Lacroix, was not printed. Among other things he did was design caterpillar vehicles to compete with the railways. However they were never manufactured. Applying philosophy to mathematics. His main work involved applying philosophy to mathematics, the philosophy taking precedence over rigorous mathematical proofs. He criticized Lagrange's use of infinite series and introduced his own ideas for series expansions of a function. The coefficients in this series are determinants now known as widely used Wronskians (so named by Muir in 1882). In 1812 he published a work claiming to show that every equation had an algebraic solution, contradicting Ruffini 's results which were already published. Wronski spent the years 1819 to 1822 in London. He came to England to try to obtain an award from the Board of Longitude but his instruments were detained by the Customs as he entered the country. He found himself in severe financial difficulties but, after his instruments had been returned to him, he was able to address the Board of Longitude. His address On the Longitude only contained generalities and did not impress.

WHAT IS "THEOSOPHY", A PROCESS OR A RELIGION? First let me make it absolutely clear what exactly it is I am talking about. I am talking about "theosophy" the thing itself, and not some or another organization misappropriating the name. I am talking about "theosophy" which is the speculative philosophical approach to the knowledge of all things that was first made famous in the 3rd century of the common era in Alexandria in Egypt, and of which the primary purpose, beyond the acquisition of knowledge, was to attempt to fend off the conquest of the world by ignorance and superstition, by which I mean to describe the Judeo-Christian world view. Now I most distinctly do NOT mean the various Theosophical societies extant today, all of which are distinctly manifestations of the "religious urge", and which therefore, are entirely dichotomous to the views and opinions and speculations of Plato, and both his precursors, and his Neo-Platonic successors. Whether they are oriented towards a combination of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism and Brahmanism as is the Original Theosophical Society (Adyar) and it's various National sub- sections , or towards "New Age Christianity" as is the Group that has evolved out of the writings of Alice Bailey ( a position towards which the American Section of the Adyar Society is turning) all of the institutional Theosophies are basically religions with bodies of doctrines that are entirely dogmatic in their approach, and relatively rigid hierarchical World-views. These hierarchical views are far more consonant with authoritarian totalitarianism than they are with the nature of theosophy as it was in it's third century format. The History of the various Theosophical Societies, and those of some of their more important leaders, shows an undeniable affinity towards various totalitarian- authoritarian political movements, such as German National socialism and Italian Fascism.

THE NINETEENTH CENTURY: 1826 - 1835. Mexico City. The Grand Lodge of New York establish three Lodges. These Lodges were formed into a Grand Lodge of the York Rite by Brother Joel R. Poinsett (American Minister to Mexico), a former Grand Master of South Carolina. However, there is no record that since the year 1815 any foreign Lodges have been warranted by the Grand Lodge of New York. The source of authority is not now so important as the so-called York Rite, or, in other words, Craft Freemasonry, flourished. Toward the end of 1826 there were twenty-five Lodges, with a membership of about seven hundred. The Escoceses, or "Scots Masons," finding their Lodges deserted, regarded the Yorkinos as renegades and traitors, and with a view to counterbalance the fast increasing power of the latter, they formed the Novenarios Munich . Franz von Baader appointed professor of philosophy and speculative theology at the New University of Munich. Some of the lectures were published under the title, Spekulative Dogmatik (1827). Judging by the titles in his writings, he appears to be yet another link in the chain that leads to the Social Philosophy and Occult Revival of the 19th Century throughout Western Europe.
