    Jun 10, 2005
The interior of St Paul's Cathedral gleamed whiter than its architect Sir Christopher Wren ever saw it yesterday, as a four-year renovation project that has cost nearly 11m was completed. With bright early summer light streaming through the windows, the cathedral's great interior was revealed in all its shining glory, including some details scarcely seen since the building was completed and others shown for the first time since the Victorians painted them over. Sir Christopher Wren. Repro ID: Description: Christopher Wren was born in Wiltshire in 1632. He became the Gresham Professor of Astronomy in London in 1657, and later the Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford. In 1663, he was asked to design a new chapel for Pembroke College, Cambridge. This, his first foray into architecture, was quickly followed by more commissions. London's Great Fire of 1666 gave Wren a chance to present a scheme to rebuild the city. In 1669 Charles II appointed Wren Surveyor General of the King's Works. In this capacity, he supervised all work on the royal palaces. In 1673 Wren resigned his Oxford professorship because of the workload. He was also knighted in 1673. Wren died in London in 1723. In , he became professor of astronomy at Gresham College and four years later he became the Savilian Professor of astronomy at Oxford until his resignation in . Wren was also one of the founding members of the Royal Society , of which he was president from to His first serious architectural venture was the Sheldonian Theatre , which can still be seen at Oxford, and he designed various other university buildings in both Oxford and Cambridge After the Great Fire of London , he was selected as the architect of St Paul's, the previous building having been destroyed. Architecture, Mathematics, and Sir Christopher Wren (Grades 5-12)
October 20 Saint Paul's Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Born in East Knoyle, Wiltshire, on October 20, 1632, Sir Christopher Wren is considered by many to be the greatest British architect of all time. The sheer breadth and vision of his work has made its presence felt for more than three centuries and has helped define the London we know today. The fact that Wren's legacy rests almost entirely upon his architectural work is somewhat surprising considering that it was not until 1663 that he designed his first building. Wren spent the first 30 years of his life consumed with science and math, specifically with astronomy, physics, and anatomy. In fact, Sir Isaac Newton included Wren, along with John Wallis and Christian Huygens, in a list of the three greatest geometers of the age.

Strictly speaking, Windsor's famous Guildhall, should be known as the Town Hall, for it was never the meeting place of the town's guilds. The meeting place or 'Guild Hall' would have been the 'Three Tuns' next door, which dates from around 1518.
The merchant and craft guilds were important to the running of the town and its trade from the earliest days. A merchant guild was in existence by 1268 and would have been involved in negotiations for the granting of Windsor's first Charter on 28th May 1277. The Charter meant that Windsor was no longer administered by the Constable of the Castle, but became a free Borough, responsible for managing its own affairs.

Trained as a scientist, Sir Christopher Wren is perhaps England's greatest architect. Among his works constructed in London after the Great Fire of 1666, was the magnificent rebuilding of St. Paul's Cathedral. The church included an innovative dome with acoustics so refined, that words whispered against the wall could be heard clearly on the opposite side of the dome.
