Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723) Christopher Wren studied mathematics and physics when he was at university. He was only twenty nine when he was made professor of Astronomy at Oxford. Wren started his career as an architect with the Sheldonian Theater in Oxford in 1662. He visited Paris in 1665, where he met the Italian sculptor Bernini, but Wren returned to a devastated London. The Great Fire of 1666 had destroyed much of the city. Wren was responsible for the rebuilding of St Paul's Cathedral, as well as fifty two other London churches. After his great achievements in the city, he was knighted and was made President of the Royal Society in 1680. Close Window Homepage Topic Chapters ... The Sir Christopher Wren Building at the College of William and Mary
I have been thinking about doing a series of posts where I talk about different places and aspects of the College of William and Mary , so I have decided that today is a good day to start talking about the college that I am attending. I also feel that today is a pretty-picture sort of day, so I think I will have a sort of visual tour here in this post.
I have decided to start with the historic end of campus, at the Sir Christopher Wren Building and the other buildings in the College Yard. The Wren Building sits in the historic college yard, flanked by two other buildings: the Brafferton, and the President's House. The Brafferton was built in 1723 with funds endowed from the estate of Sir Robert Boyle (and here is another link about him) to house the College's Indian School, where Native American boys were taught reading, writing, and arithmetic. Today, the offices of the president and the provost are in this building. I have placed a photo of this building on the right.
The President's House was built in 1732, and every president of the College has used the residence. In 1781, British troops occupied the area, and General Cornwallis used it as his headquarters. It was damaged by a fire after French officers occupied it after the siege of Yorktown, so King Louis XVI of France provided funds for repairs. I have put a photo of the President's House on the left, which I took from the direction that most people first see it when they walk over from

"If I allow the fact that I am a Negro to checkmate my will to do, now, I will inevitably form the habit of being defeated" Paul Williams, an African-American, became renown for designing major buildings such the Los Angeles International Airport and over 2000 homes in Southern California. Many of the most beautiful residences in Hollywood were created by Paul Williams. Williams was orphaned when he was four, and received little encouragement for his artistic talents. Nevertheless, he enrolled in engineering school at the University of Southern California and won an important architecture competition when he was only 25. When he was 28, he opened his own practice. Williams' clients were mostly white. "In the moment that they met me and discovered they were dealing with a Negro, I could see many of them freeze," he wrote in

News History Features ... Contacts Sir Christopher Wren's Temple Bar
Sir Christopher Wren During the eighteenth century Temple Bar was used to display the heads of traitors on iron spikes which protruded from the top of the main arch. One story goes that the Rye House plotters drew so much attention that telescopes were offered for hire in order to gain a better view. The last heads to be displayed were those of Towneley and Fletcher, who were taken at the Siege of Carlisle and executed in 1746. For some time after Towneley's execution his head was displayed on Temple Bar until a faithful family retainer secured possession of it and brought it back to Burnley, where for many years it was kept in a basket covered with a napkin in the drawing room at Towneley Hall. In 1638 he was given the "rich rectory" of Haseley, Oxfordshire.
From his string of appointments, clearly prosperous. Note that Wren's mother was the only child and heiress of a Wiltshire squire. In 1649 Wren went to Oxford as a gentleman commoner even though his father had been deprived by the Puritans.

Name: Christopher Wren, Sir Birth Date: October 20, 1632 Death Date: February 25, 1723 Place of Birth: East Knoyle, Wiltshire, England Place of Death: London, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: architect Christopher Wren, Sir Main Biography The English architect Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723) interpreted the baroque style in England and dominated English architecture for 50 years. His most important work is St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Christopher Wren was born in East Knoyle, Wiltshire, on Oct. 20, 1632, and educated at Oxford. Apparently destined for a career as a scientific scholar, he became professor of astronomy at Gresham College in London when he was 24. In 1661 he was appointed Savilian professor of astronomy at Oxford. Wren did not give his attention to architecture until he was 30. No information is available to explain the development of his interest in architecture, but his training in science and mathematics and his ability in solving practical scientific problems provided him with the technical training necessary for a man who was to undertake complex architectural projects. His temperament and education, and the society in which he moved, would naturally have inclined him to wide interests.

Sir Christopher Wren
The Royal Hospital was founded in 1682 by King Charles II for veterans who had served for twenty years and were no longer fit for duty. As Margaret Whinney explains, "Charles was the first English King to maintain a regular army, though this was much disliked by the Parliament, and some provision for pensioners was clearly necessary. There can be little doubt that the idea was based on Louis XIV's foundation of the Invalides in 1670" (146). Wren's original design was for a smaller complex with only a single quadrangle known as Figure Court. But the design was enlarged, even while the first buildings were under construction. These additions are the Light Horse and the College (originally Infirmary) Courts. See map scanned from the official Guide, back cover. (See next page of website.) All the structures are faced with brick.

This is the oldest quardrangle, begun by Wren in 1682. Three long rectangular buildings enclose the court with the fourth (south) side open to the river.

Monument
Sir Christopher Wren (or Wren's close associate, Robert Hooke)
This Roman Doric column with a flaming urn at the top was erected by Parliament to commemorate the Great Fire, which began on September 2, 1666 and in four days destroyed more than 80% of the City, including almost a hundred churches, most of the public buildings, and hundreds of streets with thousands of houses. The Portland stone column is 202 feet tall, the distance east from its base to the spot where the actual fire started in Pudding Lane. The Monument is at the intersection of Monument Street and Fish Street.
The relief on the square pedestal by Caius Gabriel Cibber
The relief depicts a personification of London grieving while Time lifts her up. Behind her buildings are in flame. Peace and Prosperity are in the clouds, a promise of the renewal of London. Charles II in armor is on the right.
See Index for additional works by Wren.
See Ann Saunders' The Art and Architecture of London (London: Phaidon, 2000; 89) for a fuller description of the Monument. Click here to return to index of art historical sites.
