English architect who designed more than 50 London churches, most notably Saint Paul's Cathedral (1675–1710). His secular works include the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford (1664–1669) and Trinity College Library in Cambridge (1676–1684). Encyclopedia Wren, Sir Christopher, 1632–1723, English architect. A mathematical prodigy, he studied at Oxford. He was professor of astronomy at Gresham College, London, from 1657 to 1661, when he became Savilian professor of astronomy at Oxford. Though now known as the greatest architect of the English baroque style, in his time Wren was a celebrated astronomer and mathematician who, in 1660, was one of the founders of the Royal Society . His architectural career began in 1661 when Charles II appointed him assistant to the royal architect and in 1665 he spent six months in Paris studying architecture. The distinguished buildings Wren created in the years thereafter owe much of their cerebral rigor to his mathematical training. After the great fire of 1666 Wren prepared a master plan for the reconstruction of London, which was never executed. The Sir Christopher Wren Building
The Sir Christopher Wren Building at the College of William and Mary in Virginia is the oldest academic building in continuous use in the United States. It was constructed between 1695 and 1699, before Williamsburg was founded, when the capital of the colony of Virginia was still located at Jamestown. Tradition has it that the building was designed by the famed English architect Sir Christopher Wren who designed St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The Wren Building has been destroyed by fire three times in 1705, 1859 and 1862. Each time the structure was rebuilt, and for more than three centuries, it has been "the soul of the College." In the building, generations of William and Mary students have attended classes and lectures, enjoyed meals and attended chapel services. Classes are still held in the Wren Building, which also is home to several faculty offices.

Principal Works
After his return to England, the fire of 1666 burned the oldest part of London. Within a few days Wren submitted a brilliant plan for rebuilding the area. The plan anticipated many of the features of modern city planning, but it was rejected because of property disputes. In 1667 he was appointed deputy surveyor general for the reconstruction of Saint Paul's Cathedral, numerous parish churches, and other buildings destroyed by the fire. Two years later he received the coveted post of surveyor of the royal works, a position that gave him control of all government building in Britain. He held this position for the following 50 years.

Wren is particularly known for his design for St Paul's Cathedral , one of very few cathedrals in England to have been built after the medieval period, and the only Renaissance cathedral in the country. He was inspired by the St Peter's In Rome for his design of St Paul's and although he was met with strong opposition about his design for the catherdral he managed to give London and England one of its finest buildings. Born in in Wiltshire , Wren was the son of the dean of Windsor . He was a pupil of Westminster School and it was there he met the young Prince Charles who would later become King and employ Wren as an architect. His academic career was centered at Oxford , where he was a member of both Wadham and All Souls ' Colleges. In

Sir Christopher Wren - scientist. (By Hugh Pearman. Review of “On a Grander Scale: the outstanding career of Sir Christopher Wren” by Lisa Jardine, 600 pp, pub. HarperCollins, £25. Review published in The Sunday Times, 1st September 2002, under the title “A restless genius never happy with his work”). Well, you had to find some way to pass the time when you were an impoverished intellectual of staunchly Royalist stock during the closing years of the Commonwealth. Wren designed gadgets, including a duplicating machine, a seed drill, and a transparent beehive. He observed the stars, was a noted mathematician, and practised anatomy. None of this was architecture. Even by the multi-tasking standards of the day, Wren was unusual. Lisa Jardine’s lengthy and immensely detailed account of Wren’s life and times chronicles how a circle of Royalist thinkers, deprived of public office and wealth under Cromwell and with time on their hands, was instrumental in progressing British science at this period. Wren, as a brilliant pupil and academic at Oxford, joined this circle at exactly the right time. In 1660 the monarchy was restored with the accession of Charles II, and the old Royalist supporters swept back into power, carrying Wren with them. As his late father, Dean Christopher Wren, and uncle Matthew were both leading churchmen loyal to the executed Charles I, the young Wren came with impeccable family credentials. He quickly became official architect to the throne. Staying on top of his game through five monarchs into the Hanoverian era was not the least of Wren’s achievements.
